How the Stalker 2 release date kept moving
When we wrote this preview, the game was planned for early 2024 on PC and Xbox Series X|S, with Xbox Game Pass at launch. It was not planned for last-generation consoles such as the Xbox One.

Since launch: PS5, Game Pass and Cost of Hope
- Leaving Game Pass: The game was due to leave Xbox Game Pass on November 15, 2025, about a year after its day-one arrival, Pure Xbox reported. The team marked the exit with a thank-you message to Xbox. Game Pass continues to rotate its lineup: Battlefield 6 joined on October 13, 2026, as Clair Obscur left.
- The PS5 version: Stalker 2 came to PS5 on November 20, 2025, after a year of Xbox and PC exclusivity. Push Square found many technical problems before the day-one patch, update 1.7. That patch included a major A-Life overhaul, in which NPCs (computer-controlled characters) and mutants fight for control of territory.
- Cost of Hope: The first story expansion launched on August 20, 2026, with a free 2.0 Unreal Engine 5 update for all owners, Pure Xbox reported. It adds two regions, the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant and the Iron Forest, and centers on the conflict between the Duty and Freedom factions.
- More to come: GSC has said that Cost of Hope is the middle chapter of a “second trilogy,” and that a future story DLC will complete the new arc. In March 2026, it said details of that DLC would be revealed later.
What is Stalker 2 like to play?
Stalker 2 is a first-person shooter with survival horror elements. It is set in the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone around the nuclear power plant.

The Zone is full of anomalies, dangerous formations that can injure or kill on contact. You can probe them by throwing bolts, and use detectors to find artifacts. These are valuable items that can have both useful and harmful effects.
Survival is a big part of the experience. You need to keep an eye on your character’s condition while dealing with mutants and rival factions.
Who you play and how the story unfolds
You enter the Zone as a stalker named Skif, looking for valuable finds. The story is not told in a straight line.

Along the way you meet different factions and characters. The story branches based on your choices, so different players can see different outcomes.
