Rainbow Six Mobile Is Shutting Down on January 15, 2027: What Players Know So Far

Ubisoft is shutting down Rainbow Six Mobile, its free-to-play tactical shooter for iPhone and Android, less than a year after the game launched worldwide. The game “will remain available until January 15, 2027,” the development team said in an October 8 message on Ubisoft’s website.

Until then, the servers stay on and new seasons are still coming. The bigger open question for players is money: Ubisoft’s announcement and FAQ do not say what happens to purchases or unspent in-game currency.

Can you still play, and should you still spend?

Yes, you can keep playing. Ubisoft’s FAQ says the game “will remain playable until its online services end on January 15, 2027,” and that the next seasons “will be released as planned.” As of October 13, the App Store listing still promoted the current season, Operation Concrete Impact, which added Zofia to the roster in September.

The Google Play and App Store listings were still live on October 13. Both store listings still displayed in-app purchase labels. Google Play rates the game Mature 17+ in the US and notes in-game purchases that include random items, while the App Store lists it at 18+.

The timing for spending is less clear. Neither the announcement nor the FAQ says when the in-game shop will close, or whether unspent premium currency will be refunded.

The FAQ asks whether there is “a refund strategy for last season’s content,” but the answer does not address refunds. It says only that more details on the transition “will be shared with players in the upcoming weeks.”

With services ending in January and refund arrangements unspecified, holding off on further purchases is the cautious choice.

Why Ubisoft is closing the game

Ubisoft’s FAQ gives a broad strategic explanation. Its mobile help center asks directly whether player numbers drove the decision. The answer does not say yes or no. It says only that the decision was made “to align our resources with our long-term strategic priorities.”

The October 8 message added that the team “will move on to other long-term strategic projects,” without naming them.

Ubisoft’s announcement did not include player numbers or revenue, but outside estimates give a rough sense of scale. Analytics firm AppMagic estimates the game earned about $5.3 million from in-app purchases across 13.1 million downloads over its lifetime, including the soft launch, Mobilegamer.biz reported.

These are third-party estimates, not Ubisoft figures. Google Play displays a 10 million-plus download count.

From a 2022 reveal to a 2027 shutdown

Nearly four years passed between the game’s announcement and its worldwide launch. The worldwide version will have run for less than 11 months when it closes.

When Ubisoft announced Rainbow Six Mobile in April 2022, it expected the game to launch later that year, according to Game World Observer. Development was led by a new team at Ubisoft Montreal, helped by other Ubisoft studios, and the game had already been in development for three years at that point, the report said.

Instead of a 2022 launch, a soft launch followed in 2023. The game was available in Poland, France, Canada and across Latin America before Ubisoft released it worldwide on February 23, 2026.

The game adapted Rainbow Six Siege’s tactical attack-and-defense gameplay into a standalone mobile shooter, with 5v5 matches in Bomb, Bomb Rush and Team Deathmatch modes, more than 20 Operators, maps based on Siege and two made for mobile, Restaurant and Summit. In its farewell message, the team thanked players for 15 seasons since the soft launch.

Separately, tracked US mobile game spending fell 18% year over year in August 2026, making it the main contributor to a 9% decline in overall US video game spending, according to Circana figures shared by Mat Piscatella, with mobile data supplied by Sensor Tower. Ubisoft has not linked those market figures to Rainbow Six Mobile’s closure.

The same slump in US games spending has also hit consoles.
