Update Your Playdate Before October 15 or It Will Lose Access to Panic’s Servers

Playdate owners have until Thursday, October 15, 2026, to update their handheld’s software. After that date, consoles still running older versions of Playdate OS will no longer be able to connect to Panic’s servers.

Panic, the company behind the yellow, crank-equipped console, sent the warning to registered owners by email and on social media. “On October 15th 2026, the secure certificate used by older versions of Playdate OS will expire,” the company wrote, Time Extension reported. It added: “Updating your Playdate to the latest OS will fix it!”

Why an expiring certificate matters

A security certificate is how a device proves to a server that its connection can be trusted. Like a passport, it has an expiry date. Once the certificate built into older Playdate software runs out, Panic’s servers will stop accepting connections from those consoles.

Newer versions of the operating system are not affected, which is why Panic says a regular update is all most owners need to do.

The version to look for

Owners need Playdate OS 3.0.5 or later, according to Panic’s notice as reported by Siliconera. The newest release is OS 3.1.2, posted on September 16, so a console that has not been updated for a while will likely move straight to it.

The update runs over Wi-Fi from the console itself. Panic’s help page lists three steps:

  1. Connect the Playdate to a Wi-Fi network.
  2. Open Settings, then go to System and choose System Update.
  3. If a new update is available, follow the prompt to install it.

Panic asks owners to keep the console on, unlocked and ideally connected to USB power while the update installs. The company says it should take no more than a minute or two.

If the deadline passes

A Playdate on older software will still run after October 15, Siliconera reported, but it will no longer reach Panic’s servers. Bringing it up to date after that point will be more complicated. According to Siliconera, patches and repairs will still be possible, though they may require the Playdate SDK, the developer toolkit Panic offers for computers.

The timing is awkward for anyone who has left a Playdate in a drawer. Panic’s warning arrived as Season 3 began on October 8, adding two new games a week for four weeks, Time Extension reported. For owners coming back to the console for the new season, the update is the first thing worth doing.
