Top Rating Game of 2022: More and more top-notch titles continue to grace every platform as the video game industry adapts to life after the epidemic. The excellent God of War Ragnarok, the vast Horizon Forbidden West, and the updated The Last of Us Part 1 were all released by Sony and rank among the year’s biggest first-party blockbusters.
Dusk Falls and Bayonetta 3 are notable examples of the fantastic exclusives that Microsoft and Nintendo released on their respective platforms. Great third-party titles like Elden Ring, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, and Need for Speed Unbound were released in between all of those. We’ve chosen our top games of 2022, just in time for the holidays (and after countless hours of gameplay). No matter your preferred style of play, these games cover a wide range of genres and platforms.
God of War Ragnarok
God of War, released in 2018, not only revived a franchise that had been dormant for five years but also raised the bar for the action genre with its emotional father/son tale and more mature tone.
These ideas are taken and amplified in God of War Ragnarok. Ragnarok, which is substantially longer than its predecessor, has improved combat and navigation, and the narrative does a fantastic job of concluding the Norse mythological arc.
Horizon Forbidden West
One of the few successful original brands released during the PS4 era was Horizon Zero Dawn, which featured the incredible hunter Aloy and a world in which machines have taken over. The gorgeous open environment of Horizon Zero Dawn and the gameplay, which combined stealth and some of the best arrow combat in video games, drew in players.
In its Western setting, Horizon Forbidden West accomplishes all these and more. This is a worthy sequel because it keeps everything gamers liked about the first game while adding new elements like underwater movement and battle.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
Activision has released a new Call of Duty game this year. The two most recent games in the series (Cold War, Vanguard) fell short of the high standard that the 2019 Modern Warfare reboot set. Since then, Call of Duty: Warzone’s free-to-play battle royale gameplay has become a gaming phenomenon.
This elevates Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 to a new level of excellence. The single-player is the greatest in the series for a long time, and the multiplayer is just as tight. Meanwhile, the audio-visual presentation in this year’s shooters is among the best.
Need for Speed Unbound
Some of the best Need for Speed games in recent memory, such as Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit and Need for Speed: Most Wanted, was produced by Burnout developer Criterion Games. With more recent titles like Need for Speed 2015 and Need for Speed Payback, things began to deteriorate.
Need for Speed Unbound is the actual return to form we’ve been yearning for, even though Need for Speed Heat moved the franchise in a much-needed new direction.
Unbound has a unique visual approach that combines eye-catching anime design with hyperrealistic depictions of the world and cars. Perhaps more importantly, it’s one of the only high-end arcade racers with a forgiving driving style that lets you quickly and stylishly concentrate on racing.
Elden Ring
The magnificent tale of Elden Ring must be mentioned when discussing the top video games of 2022. In addition to selling approximately 18 million copies, this joint effort between “Game of Thrones” creator George R. R. Martin and Dark Souls creator From Software became the fastest-selling game for publisher Bandai Namco. Elden Ring, a game that adapts the well-liked Dark Souls paradigm for a more general audience, keeps the punishingly challenging gameplay that From Software is renowned for while plunging players into a sizable open world with a slightly more coherent plot. Elden Ring achieved actual championdom at a time when many gamers complain that games are becoming too superficial.
As Dusk Falls
Even though Microsoft didn’t end the year with any massive blockbuster Xbox Series X exclusives, its first-party work was still high caliber. Just look at Interior Night’s As Dusk Falls, created by a team of seasoned members of Quantic Dream’s dominant interactive drama studio. Dusk Falls is one of the most original games launched this year because of its slick art style, the beautiful yet painful narrative of two intertwined families, and its interactive story, in which your choices affect the plot. It also helps that the game has a creative multiplayer component that enables teams to develop their branching plotlines in couch co-op or with real-time Twitch spectators.
Gran Turismo 7
Developer Polyphony Digital has released a new installment in their illustrious racing simulator series five years after the debut of Gran Turismo Sport, a PS4-only title. No matter where you play Gran Turismo 7, released on PS4 and PS5, the graphics are stunning. With support for real-time ray tracing, 4K native resolution, and fluid gameplay at 60 frames per second, the current-gen edition is a fantastic visual treat. This is added along with other notable gameplay improvements like restoring dynamic time and real-time weather effects like rain. Remember that the game requires an internet connection even for the robust single-player mode.
Bayonetta 3
The House that Mario Built is fully capable of veering into the more mature territory, despite Nintendo’s reputation for kid-friendly games. Bayonetta 3 is the best example available. The hack-and-slash action in Platinum Games’ Bayonetta 3 is just as outrageous as its universe plot.
One of the year’s best action games, Bayonetta 3 adds new gameplay elements for the protagonist, allowing you to summon powerful infernal demons to battle alongside you and a variety of playable characters, including newcomer Viola and series mainstay Jeanne.
Kirby and the Forgotten Land
Kirby and the Forgotten Land, another excellent Nintendo Switch exclusive published this year, is the first title in the franchise to have full 3D graphics. Players in Forgotten Land control the adorable pink creature across gaming history’s cutest post-apocalyptic landscape while preserving a linear structure.
Traditional gameplay elements like Kirby’s copy ability are now upgradeable, and local co-op allows you to play with a friend. The game shines in the brand-new “Mouthful Mode,” which adds a challenging and funny element to the experience by having the eponymous character swallow big objects like cars and traffic cones.
