Nintendo is looking to the past because the Switch’s future is unclear. Is the Nintendo Switch too old? It’s Nintendo’s sixth year of their massively successful handheld, but can it keep its momentum going despite concerns about horsepower and a potentially barren release schedule in the second half of 2023? How much of your $70 should go towards purchasing The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom?

These are just some of the inquiries posed in the run-up to the first Nintendo Direct of 2023, an event expected to set the tone for the remainder of the year. Nintendo fans were both enthusiastic and wary. The clamour for a next-gen Switch has been tough to ignore after a year marked by releases with substantial technical difficulties and the long-rumoured Switch Pro failing to materialise.

As a result, Nintendo faithful were left wanting the Switch 2 and new details about The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. On the other hand, they saw the introduction of Game Boy and Game Boy Advance titles on Switch, one of the most anticipated rumours, come true.

A release date for Advance Wars was announced, and the long-rumoured Baten Kaitos collection was also trimmed. Adding a new playable character and course to Mario Kart 8 isn’t the only sign of love for the racing game.

The Nintendo Switch is getting older, so it’s no surprise that many recent announcements focused more on the system’s history than its future. The Metroid Prime remaster by Retro Studios, which has been in the works since the Switch’s infancy, was a significant focus of the Direct and was even given a shadow drop at the end of the presentation.

For many years, fans have clamoured for this release, especially given how difficult it is to get a copy of Metroid Prime. Is the remaster a sufficient stopgap till the next Switch is released? There’s no way around it.

Fans of Nintendo Are Aware that Things Could Be Far Worse

Nintendo fans, though, realise that things could be far worse. The situation is a lot worse. With less than 20 retail releases, 2016 was a slow year for Wii U games. While the GameCube did slightly better, both consoles virtually died out in their final years as independent developers abandoned them for newer systems and publishers waited for the next generation to come out before releasing games for them.

The Nintendo Switch, which just overtook the PlayStation 4 in sales to become the third best-selling console of all time, looks and sounds very sturdy in comparison. Even with the glitches, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet sold almost 18 million copies in 2017.

Nintendo has kept a consistent stream of new releases on the system, including sequels, indie releases, and remasters. When you include in the occasional blockbuster release, the Switch has managed to stay relevant, if not necessary, despite being many generations behind in technology.

That feeling was amplified by a trailer for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was released today. For Switch owners, the sequel to Breath of the Wild has been a sparkling gem on the horizon ever since its brief reveal in 2019.

The popularity of the game’s predecessor has increased, and some gamers consider it the pinnacle of gaming. There has been continuous conjecture about the next Nintendo Direct, the next Smash Bros. reveal, the next remaster, and the next sequel. Tears of the Kingdom have come to embody that optimism and anticipation.

With today’s video, Nintendo has given Zelda fans about two minutes of new footage to keep them guessing. It wasn’t much, but it seems enough to silence critics of the Switch’s steep $70 price tag, which seems excessive for such an ageing gadget.

The years of anticipation have resulted in sky-high expectations for Tears of the Kingdom, and the game seems unlikely to measure up to them. However, Nintendo has a history of meeting and exceeding Zelda fans’ expectations.

A Murky Future for the Switch

Unfortunately for Nintendo, releasing Tears of the Kingdom has raised several new concerns. Many highly-anticipated sequels have finally been released, and the supply of remasters is rapidly diminishing.

There wasn’t much information about upcoming games for Nintendo Switch at the Direct, so it’s unclear what the rest of 2023 will bring for the system. There is a growing consensus among fans and industry watchers that it is time for Nintendo to move on from the Switch.

That’s going to be a challenge for Nintendo. The Switch has been Nintendo’s best-selling console in the past two to twenty-five years, outperforming the Wii at its peak. The creative and cultural rebirth the organisation has experienced as a result of this is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to recreate.

Many people will be thrilled by the announcement of a new Switch, but it is terrifying to think that another Animal Crossing: New Horizon may ever happen.

With its first Direct of 2023, Nintendo confirmed several previously speculated features. There won’t be too many people left after today. Today, more than ever, victory is within reach.
