Suppose you’re like the rest of us at MacRumors. In that case, your iPhone is probably cluttered with unnecessary images, apps, and contacts, so we compiled some helpful tips for organizing and optimizing your iPhone to free up space and make it feel less congested.

Delete Outdated Pictures

This year I decided to purchase a home. As a result, I now have a thousand pictures of things like peeling ceiling paint, floor marks, fallen trees, efflorescence in the crawl space, overflowing rain gutters, and hundreds of other minor home problems.

Suppose you find yourself in a similar position. In that case, it’s an excellent opportunity to sort your photos into albums, transfer them to an appropriate location on your computer or another device, or delete them altogether.

Launch Photos on your iPhone, and delete or move any unwanted photos to an album using the Share Sheet. I will do as you suggest and save a copy in the Files app, so it doesn’t take up too much space in Photos.

Remove Duplicate or Outdated Contacts

If you have duplicate contacts, you can now easily merge them with iOS 16. Launch Contacts, and you’ll see a notification at the top that any duplicates can be combined. This is also a great moment to clean up your Contacts list by removing any stale entries for people you no longer communicate with.

Delete Inactive Apps

Among the many options Apple provides for removing unused programs from your iPhone, the General section of Settings is where you’ll find the option to delete apps. You may then delete new apps and free up space on your iPhone’s Home Screen and in its storage by viewing the list of items taking up the most room.

Delete Old Messages

Especially when they contain several photographs, old iMessages can take up a surprising amount of space. If you want to know which messages take up the most room in your Messages app before you delete them, go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage > Messages. Select a specific type of content, such as images or videos, and touch the delete button.

Be patient as your media files load; this may take a while.

Clean Up Old Reminders and Notes

It’s a good idea to delete old Notes and Reminders from the Photos, Messages, and Apps sections while you’re at it.

Notes can quickly become crowded with outdated information because I am not excellent at keeping up with it. Not that emptying it once in a while will solve any significant problems, but it will feel good to have some space. To get rid of a note, you must launch the Notes app and swipe to the left.

Review Your Notification Settings

Over a year, it’s simple to install applications, forget about them, and ignore the numerous unnecessary notifications that begin flooding your inbox. The issue can be fixed by removing the offending apps, but there may be some you’d like to keep even if you don’t want to receive notifications from them.

One may control which apps are allowed to send notifications and which are not in Settings > Notifications. Removing unnecessary alerts and setting up App Summary, so you’re only notified once a day, will help you focus better.

Check Up on Battery Usage

Now is an excellent time to check how much power your devices are consuming, so you can identify the apps that are draining your battery and where you might be able to cut back.

You can check how much battery each app has used over the past 24 and 10 hours under Settings > Battery. Knowing whether the battery was depleted by foreground or background activity might help you make the most of your power supply.

Turn off background updates for apps like Photos and Weather that update automatically when you’re not using them. To enable background app refresh, head to Settings and then select the feature.
