Backlash Against Destiny 2: Lightfall Backlash Has Started

The new Lightfall DLC for Destiny 2 saw what the antithesis of a honeymoon phase would be—immediate backlash over its themes. But now the response to that response has started. Why? There have been three main events:

1) The campaign, completed by most devoted players, is the weakest aspect of the expansion and the basis for your initial assessment.

However, many advantages can be found when we delve deeper into the development, the additional seasonal content, and the significant quality-of-life upgrades that have come with Lightfall.

2) For some reason, Bungie released every Strand fragment, effectively tripling the number of Strand fragments intended to be time-gated until the next reset or the first raid race the following Friday.

That gave players access to various Strand builds, including a component addressing the issue of “your grapple is never up,” representing a significant departure from the campaign’s focus on low cooldowns.

Strand has turned from seeming overwhelming and like an overbearing aspect of the campaign (which it is) to becoming one of the most enjoyable subclasses and possibly having a far stronger launch than Beyond Light’s Stasis.

My rival and former Fireteam Chat member Travis Northup published a mocking review of Lightfall on IGN, giving the expansion a 5/10.

Everyone started talking about the expansion’s genuine strengths because of the reflexive defense of the development, which many people were missing. In conclusion, Lightfall’s campaign is not good, at least from a storytelling standpoint (though I’d argue it’s still quite compelling from a combat one).

Everyone initially perceived the expansion that way, which is why there was an immediate pushback in opposition. The feeling is that it is filler. There is a sense that the characters are conveying the wrong tone.

In the vein of Destiny 1, too much is left unexplained. The entire plot could be omitted; not much would be lost if the opening and closing sequences were combined.

That, however, ignores everything else that was included in this expansion. Strand, which initially seemed to be a miss until all the timegates were opened, exotics were farmed, and everyone started crafting insane builds, is now getting much positive attention.

Although the armor charge system initially felt like a step backward, it’s pretty simple to understand and start creating builds that are, with very few exceptions, nearly identical to the ones we had before. The alterations to QoL are profound.

The lack of a million seasonal currencies is fantastic, and loadouts are amazing. Crafting has been simplified and is no longer a painful slog. Exotics and new weaponry, in particular, are a lot of fun.

Two further minor enhancements outside of the campaign still need some work. Both too easy (everyone becomes a “veteran” at level 6 way too soon) and too tricky seem to apply to the Guardian Rank system (the grind from 6 to 12 resets every season).

Despite their good intentions, commendations have become mindless spam because they are connected to significant defeats and victories. Yet unlike, say, the whole Lightfall campaign, these are minor flaws that can be remedied.

The story is undoubtedly substantial but cannot derail the expansion, including many fantastic new contents. Lightfall is not the failure some have made it out to be. However, I hope The Last Form gets better.
