Many viewers are relieved to learn that HoYoverse will add a new Geo-based character.

    For a few different reasons, I’ve been playing Hogwarts Legacy on both the PlayStation 5 and the PC. When I first started playing on the PS5, I quickly recognized that it would become a family contest to determine who gets to play when.

    I was able to play in my office while my 12-year-old went on his trip in the family room thanks to having a second copy on Steam. Everyone benefits (until my 15-year-old decides she wants to play also).

    The second justification relates to work: I was interested in comparing the game’s performance between PC and consoles. PS5 performance is excellent, but what about PC? The short answer is: Not fantastic, but not bad, either, assuming you know what you’re doing. Of course, it depends a lot on your PC and your settings.

    My computer’s specifications are as follows before we continue:

    • GPU: RTX 3080
    • CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D
    • 32GB RAM
    • Monitor: 27” LG OLED @ 2560 x 1440

    I use SSD drives for my games and an NVMe drive for my Windows 11 operating system. Although I can’t use the maximum settings and still get acceptable framerates, it is a quick, powerful machine that can handle most of what I throw at it.

    My game automatically set the quality of Nvidia DLSS to Ultra while disabling all Ray-Tracing settings. Initially, there was only a slight amount of stuttering as it went rather smoothly. I streamed and recorded, and only in the more intense action moments did this slightly hurt my fps.

    So I enabled Ray-Tracing, and the game immediately froze. I was fluctuating wildly between 11 and 30 frames per second at any given time. Even without gaming recordings or broadcasting, this continued.

    In the end, I performed two things to get a constant framerate and no stuttering: I reduced my overall graphic settings to High and switched Ray-Tracing back off. DLSS was set to Quality. However, for a quick and simple fix, these two actions were really helpful.

    I still intend to go back into settings and begin turning some of the quality levels back to Ultra and checking this out. My first piece of advice is to switch off ray-tracing, which is located at the very bottom of the graphics options if Hogwarts Legacy isn’t running smoothly on your PC.

    Try one of the following in addition to this, or a mix of them:

    • If you have DLSS, switch it to Performance or Ultra Performance.
    • Set the graphics quality of all your devices to a single lower preset (Ultra to High, High to Medium, etc.) Later, you can return and make changes.
    • Reduce the resolution (from 4k to 2k, 2k to 1080p, etc.) If your CPU is the problem, it won’t really matter if your GPU is overworked.
    • Run a test on your computer, such as 3DMark, to see how it is performing.
    • Verify the minimum and recommended PC system requirements for the game. How much RAM do you have?
    • Ensure that your computer’s drivers, particularly the graphics card driver, are all up to date.

    Again, my solution was straightforward: Disabling ray-tracing and switching the game’s quality setting from Ultra to High fully resolved almost all of the performance difficulties I was encountering. Yes, some graphical fidelity was sacrificed, but who cares if the game can hardly run at all?

    You’ll have to use some trial and error because your results may differ. This isn’t really a buggy game so much as one that isn’t as optimized as it could be, but I hope the developers also provide some fixes that aid performance on PC.
