In this case, the chaos was caused by a free gift given out on Christmas Day. When Epic Games announced on December 15 that it would be giving away free games as part of a holiday sale, it generated some buzz.
For many years, the annual sale that Epic Games hosts have included daily giveaways. Epic Games’ servers decided that, nope, it’s not good
That, in turn, led to Epic’s server performance being less than stellar.
So apparently, Epic Games gave Death Stranding Director's Cut for free, but then it crashed their servers. Now, instead of the Director's Cut, they're giving out the Standard Edition instead.

Once the servers were back up and running normally, Epic Games decided to give away the regular version of Death Stranding rather than the director’s cut. Still a good game, to be sure. Not the chef’s kiss the Director’s Cut is, but…
Even if you buy the standard edition, PC Gamer says you can upgrade to the Director’s Cut for only $6. Additionally, up until December 26th, the Death Stranding base game could be downloaded for free from the Epic Games website.
We discussed how the pandemic changed our perspective on Death Stranding earlier this year. We now know there will be a sequel, and we hope it will feature even more fantastically named people.
