Infogrames created the Alone in the Dark series of survival horror games. Most games put players in control of the private eye of Edward Carnby as he investigates a supposedly haunted house or town inhabited by the living dead.
The series, and its first installment in particular, are commonly credited with pioneering the survival horror subgenre of video games. Aside from Lovecraft’s books, other sources of inspiration for subsequent games in the series include voodoo, the Wild West, and the artwork of H. R. Giger.
The series currently has six episodes, each exploring a unique topic or geographical area. The video games inspired two comic books and two feature films. After being owned by Atari SA, the Alone in the Dark series was sold to THQ Nordic in September 2018.

Alone in the Dark Storyline
Edward Carnby, a private detective, is the series’ primary character. He’s a middle-aged private eye in the 1920s in the first three games. In 2001, he is depicted as a young adult in The New Nightmare. Carnby underwent a radical makeover for the series’ 2008 chapter.
Until the bonus game Jack in the Dark, in which the character Grace Saunders from Alone in the Dark 2 takes center stage, he has played the lead role in every game. Two movies have been made with him as the main protagonist, both of which are only tangentially connected to the fun.
Edward Carnby, a private investigator, investigates supernatural incidents in the 1920s in the three original games. As the story opens in 1924 (Alone in the Dark), he is hired by an antique dealer to look into a piano found in the loft of the derelict Louisiana estate Derceto, whose owner, Jeremy Hartwood, committed suicide there.

On Christmas Eve, 1924 (Alone in the Dark 2), Carnby follows his late partner Ted Stryker’s trail of evidence to an old California estate called “Hell’s Kitchen” and an infamous mobster who resided there to solve a case involving the kidnapping of little Grace Saunders.
After a film team vanishes in the Mojave Desert of California in 1925 (Alone in the Dark 3), he is sent there to investigate. The town is called Slaughter Gulch, a small, rundown ghost town. Emily Hartwood, Jeremy’s niece and co-protagonist in the first game, also serves as a damsel in distress in the third game.
As seen in “Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare,” Carnby is looking into his best buddy Charles Fiske’s death. He recruits Aline Cedrac, a young university professor specializing in ancient Indian languages, to accompany him on a mission to Shadow Island.
The production of Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare involved shifting the period from the 1920s to 2001 and creating a legend to explain that Edward Carnby was part of a family of Shadow Hunters, all of whom were named Edward Carnby and were born on February 29 every 40 years.
An anglicized rendition of the Arabic name “El War Qarn’bi,” which means “the one who confronts evil incarnate and chases out the shadows,” is portrayed here. The original Edward Carnby, born in 1888, allegedly disappeared between 1920 and 1939 after getting involved in a series of bizarre affairs. Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare’s main character, Edward Carnby, was born in 1968.
Alone in the Dark (2008) reimagined the series’ lore. The story is consistent with the first three games and does not include Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare. The park and its surrounds in New York City’s Central Park serve as settings for the story.
The events of the game are set in 2008, and it is asserted that there is only one Edward Carnby; he has been possessed since the 1920s and is now over 100 years old, although still appearing young.

Alone in the Dark Development
When Frédérick Raynal was employed at Infogrames, he undertook a side project to develop a game engine. Didier Chanfray, who created the 3D models, helped construct a playable prototype of the attic, the game’s first room.
The artwork needed to finish the 3D prototype was made in an internal contest. The game’s core crew decided to incorporate Yal Barroz’s artwork. Frédérick Raynal directed the movie.
A significant disagreement between the crew and the director of Infogrames (Bruno Bonnell) occurred shortly after the initial release of Alone in the Dark regarding the sequel’s direction. Most of the original staff eventually departed Infogrames to create Adeline Software International.
The original crew planned parts of the sequels before they left, as stated in an interview conducted shortly after Alone in the Dark’s first release. In it, Carnby’s ability to dress as Santa Claus was mentioned, and a sketch of the mansion used in the sequel was shown.

As far as we know, the original game’s engine was the first to implement interpolated animation, in which the computer generates animation frames in between predetermined ones. One of the benefits of this method is that it allows the game to scale to the capabilities of the player’s machine while also lowering the amount of storage space it needs.
The first two Alone in the Dark sequels (Alone in the Dark 2 and Alone in the Dark 3) made minimal alterations to the original game’s engine. Infogrames revised it for use in the 1996 game Time Gate: Knight’s Chase.
