Steam Removes Citybuilder Game Amid DMCA Controversy

The city-building game Workers & Resources: Soviet Republic is all about mastering logistics and supply chains. Sin thinks highly of it. The developers of the game claim that the game’s supply has been cut off from Steam as a result of DMCA takedown notices made by a previously respected member of our community.

A DMCA takedown notice resulted in the removal of the game. An explanation of the problem is provided below. At this time, the game is not available for purchase starts the most recent revision to a Steam blog entry. At the moment, going to the Workers & Resources shop page will take you to the Steam main page instead.

Developer 3Division claims this is due to a disagreement with a community member who published a tutorial on Steam for Cosmonaut mode, an increased difficulty setting for Workers & Resources. It should be noted that 3Division later added a more difficult realistic option to the game itself, which uses some similar themes.

Peter Adamcik, a producer at 3Division, has said that the guide’s author requested in-game recognition, saying they probably do so along with other men who produced various guides/challenges or contributors when the game is complete. The writer of the guide apparently found this intolerable, and he even sent DMCA takedown warnings to a YouTuber who wouldn’t link to his Steam guide.

The developer team got unhappy over this, they claim, and resolved to never mention the name of the challenge he purportedly ‘created’ again, prompting the guide author to file DMCA takedowns against the Workers & Resources official site and its presence on Steam.

It’s not helping the development process, 3Division says, because he literally just made a guide with some conceivable way to play the game and labeled it Cosmonaut mode. One positive thing he contributed was evidence from the guide’s success that players desired a more realistic and difficult experience.

The purpose of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act is to allow the rightful owners of copyrighted works to have them promptly removed from all digital distribution channels. Most services, like YouTube and Steam, will err on the side of removing the material without much or any scrutiny, and then evaluate it to see if it can be restored.

3Divison claims in a statement to Kotaku that the community member filing these reports is a lawyer. According to Adamcik, it seems like he just misuses the fact that he is an attorney at law he will absolutely manage the suit cheaper than us, so he thought he may get anything he wanted from us because we will not go for pricey litigation. Nevertheless, technically speaking, he does not have any ground under his foot to stay on, and we probably will fight to the death!

Although the Cosmonaut mode guide has been the subject of a DMCA takedown notice, it may still be accessed online. While no longer for sale, Workers & Resources is still playable by existing owners.
