San Antonio, Texas: Six Arrested in Suspected Illegal Gambling Raid

A tip about illegal gambling took Bexar County deputies to a house on Esma Street on Wednesday, September 23. They went in on a warrant, and six people came out under arrest.

The address sits in the 100 block, near where South Presa Street meets Southton Road in southeast Bexar County, sheriff’s spokesman Deputy Noel Diaz told KSAT.

26 machines, and drugs

Inside, Diaz said, deputies found 26 machines the office calls illegal gambling machines, along with drugs. News 4 San Antonio reported that deputies also seized multiple motherboards and narcotics, as did the San Antonio Express-News. Whether those boards came out of the same 26 machines or from other equipment isn’t stated.

Who faces what

By Wednesday evening, News 4 San Antonio had published all six names and their counts, crediting the sheriff’s office. What that list shows is a split.

Three of the six were listed with gambling counts. All three drew gambling promotion, a Class A misdemeanour; one of them also drew keeping a gambling place, the same class; two drew possession of a gambling device, equipment or paraphernalia, a count the list leaves unclassified.

The other three were already wanted before deputies arrived. One was listed with a failure-to-identify count and, separately, a felony warrant alleging injury to a child, elderly or disabled person. Another was held on a warrant for gambling promotion, the third on two drug-possession warrants.

That second group is where the story gets easy to overstate. Only one of those warrants is titled as a gambling offence, and a title tells you what a warrant alleges — not what lay behind it, and not whether it touched this address at all.

Not the first warrant here

This is not the first time deputies have come to the house. Diaz said a warrant over similar activity was executed there in 2022, which doesn’t mean the same people were involved both times, or that anything ran continuously in between.

Nor is it the only Texas game room in the news this month. And well beyond Texas, what counts as an illegal gambling machine is still being argued over. Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court ruled in June that skill games are slot machines under state law, and lawmakers there are floating a six-month delay to an October deadline. In Missouri, a man pleaded guilty on September 3 to federal charges over arcade gambling.

Everyone arrested is presumed innocent. The counts are allegations, and an arrest isn’t a conviction.
