Ron Gilbert Starts Work on Thimbleweed Park 2, Due in Early 2028

Ron Gilbert has started work on Thimbleweed Park 2. In a July 30, 2026, post on his Grumpy Gamer blog, the Monkey Island creator wrote that production had just begun and that the game is “due out in early 2028.”

This time there is no crowdfunding. Gilbert said his studio, Terrible Toybox, will self-publish the sequel “with the help of a private investor.” The first game was funded on Kickstarter. Several of the original team are coming back, including Gary Winnick, Mark Ferrari, David Fox and Octavi Navarro, with Steve Kirk returning as composer and Jenn Sandercock producing.

A murder at the Edmund Mansion

The Steam page brings back Agents Ray and Reyes, who are now investigating a murder at the Edmund Mansion. It describes the setup as a spoof of a classic whodunit in which everyone is a suspect. Terrible Toybox pitches the game as neither a straight sequel nor a prequel, but more of the same weird Thimbleweed Park.

Steam lists only a 2028 release so far. Gilbert said the game will also come to Mac, Linux, GOG and Nintendo Switch.

Where the first game left off

Thimbleweed Park came out in March 2017 and was Gilbert and Winnick’s return to the point-and-click style they helped create with Maniac Mansion at Lucasfilm Games in 1987. Game Informer’s Elise Favis gave it 8.5 out of 10, writing that it “revels in its humor, and succeeds in its efforts toward better puzzle design.”
