Pokemon Stadium was made available on Nintendo Switch Online last month for the first time since its release on the N64 back in 2000. Players can only access “rental” Pokemon that have been built into the game because some compromises had to be made to make the game viable on the Switch.

Sadly, a problem claimed that some movements from the rented Pokemon weren’t truly permitted. Since none of these Pokemon had been edited by players, that would have made little sense, but it appears the problem has been fixed as a result of a Nintendo update.

Joe Merrick of Serebii.net found the modification. Merrick’s answer is available in the Tweet that is posted below for readers.

Oh huh, apparently Pokémon Stadium got updated in the small Nintendo 64 NSO patch that dropped the other day, and it sorted a bug that was displaying some movesets from the rentals as illegal.

It puts the colour of the move to purple when it deems the move as impossible.

One of Pokemon Stadium’s main draws when it first came out on the Nintendo 64 was the ability to employ Pokemon from Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow in 3D combat via a special Transfer Pak attachment. Rentable Pokemon would have to be used by players who lacked a Game Boy game.

The game would flag those moves as “illegal,” barring their usage if a player tried to use a Pokemon that had been altered via a bug or a hack tool like Game Shark.

Rental Pokemon are the only option in Pokemon Stadium on Nintendo Switch because there is no method to import Pokemon from earlier games (at least not right now).

However, there have been rumors that this might alter in a later update! Although the original Pokemon games have not yet been revealed, Nintendo Switch Online introduced Game Boy games earlier this year.

The addition of Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow to the service seems inevitable given the series’ enormous popularity. Fans of Pokemon will undoubtedly want compatibility to be added to Pokemon Stadium if that occurs, but in the interim, they’ll just have to make do with rental Pokemon.
