Warner Bros. Discovery confirmed that the much-anticipated Mortal Kombat 12 is not only in the works but also targeting a 2023 launch. Since 2011, Warner Bros. Games (formerly known as Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment) has produced and developed every Mortal Kombat game created by NetherRealm Studios. Further to Mortal Kombat 12, Warner Bros. Games has Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, a spinoff of the Batman: Arkham series, developed by Rocksteady Studios, scheduled for release in May of 2023.

Speaking of DC, Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon reacted to the MK12 announcement in a characteristically tongue-in-cheek way, tweeting, “So who has heard the news about Injustice 3?” Boon was the creative director of both Injustice: Gods Among Us and Injustice 2, fighting games developed by NetherRealm that were inspired by the Mortal Kombat series but used DC Comics characters instead of Marvel ones. (To be clear, Warner Bros. has not confirmed an Injustice sequel despite widespread speculation and supposed leaks.)

Every Main-Series Mortal Kombat Game So Far
First released in 1992 for arcades, Mortal Kombat was later adapted to home systems by Midway. Next came Mortal Kombat II in 1993, Mortal Kombat 3 in 1995, and Mortal Kombat 4 in 1997.
Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, developed and published by Midway, was the fifth main series installment in the Mortal Kombat brand and the first to be released exclusively for home video game consoles rather than in arcades. Next came 2004’s Mortal Kombat: Deception and 2006’s Mortal Kombat: Armageddon after the success of Deadly Alliance.
Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe (2008), Midway’s eighth and final installment in the main series, was published in collaboration with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. After Midway declared bankruptcy in 2009, Warner Bros. purchased the rights to Mortal Kombat and other Midway properties.
With franchise co-creator Boon as creative director, in 2010, NetherRealm was established to produce subsequent editions. Mortal Kombat, the ninth main installment in the series, was published by NetherRealm and distributed by Warner Bros. Mortal Kombat X came out in 2015 after the soft reboot, and Mortal Kombat 11 came out in 2019. A release date for Mortal Kombat 12 has not been set, although it is expected to arrive in 2023.
