It’s unsurprising that Magic the Gathering, a fantasy card game that’s been around for decades, and Lord of the Rings, which has one of the most well-known worlds in the world, would cross over at some point. If anything, we’re surprised it took as long as it did.

Magic The Gathering Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth will come out on June 23, 2023, so you have time to come up with your dream group of Fellowship characters to take to the battlefield.

Lord of the Rings MTG Prerelease Pack and Event Dates

In any case, we’re not upset. The Lord of the Rings set for MTG will be available on MTG Arena on June 20, a few days before it comes out for tabletop play. But you can play with the cards before anyone else if you go to a Lord of the Rings pre-release between June 16 and June 22.

Starter Kit

There are two decks of sixty cards, and the cards Aragorn and Arwen, Wed, and The Lidless Eye are all made of foil.

Set Booster Bundle

This set has 20 foil lands, 20 non-foil lands, and a life counter. It also has eight Set Boosters. It also has unique variants with no borders, like the Frodo and Sam cards shown below. These “Scene Cards” are essential to the Lord of the Rings story.

Commander Decks

Four Commander Decks based on well-known characters are available for purchase:

  • Elven Council (Green/Blue)
  • Food and Fellowship (White/Black/Green)
  • Riders of Rohan (Blue/Red/White)
  • The Hosts of Mordor (Blue/Black/Red)

Rings of Power and The One Ring

As you might expect, the Rings of Power and The One Ring are important parts of the Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth set. Each is a Legendary Artifact in the game, but The One Ring also has its version. The first one is free, but the second one is a “Serialized 1/1 card,” meaning there is only ONE ring.
