Rockstar was recently intruded on by a hacker who leaked a bunch of early development videos of GTA 6 and made several claims about the game. He claimed that he has successfully obtained the source code for both GTA 5 and GTA 6. This caused a huge disruption among the fans, leading them to think if the game would get delayed.
And while Rockstar did confirm that their data was compromised and indeed the leaked videos showed GTA 6’s early game development videos. They also said that these hacks didn’t cause any disruption to the development of the next entry or the GTA Online servers. But is everything really going smoothly over at Rockstar and is GTA 6 not going to be delayed? Let’s find out!
GTA 6 Leaks
Rockstar recently announced that they suffered from a “network intrusion” which gave the hacker unauthorized access to their confidential data, which he leaked to the public. The hacker claimed to have released over 90 videos of GTA 6, which Rockstar confirmed to be early development footage of the game and not even close to the final version.
However, the hacker also claimed to have downloaded the source code for both GTA 6 and GTA 5. This is not the first time that a hacker had gotten his hands on the source code of an upcoming game and we have seen similar incidents causing the game release to be pushed back a year or two. But since we don’t have a release date, we can’t be certain if the game has actually been delayed or not.
According to Rockstar, the hack has not caused any disruption to their ongoing development or their live services. Everything seems to be running on schedule and they don’t expect any long-term effect on the development. Well, that sure sounds promising as many of us have been waiting for years to see the next GTA title.
There will be Repercussions
Rockstar might have succeeded in reassuring their fans that everything is indeed going according to plan but there is no doubt that this hack was one heck of a disaster for Rockstar and GTA 6. It’s one of the biggest hacks of the gaming industry and while it might not have shown the game in its final stage, it has helped confirm a lot of speculations that were circling the game for many years now.
According to Bloomberg, the hack has caused quite a disruption in the studio and Rockstar might limit the work-from-home flexibility for the developers. So there are going to be some major changes in management and the overall workflow. The hacker claims to have gotten hold of all the information and leaks via Slack.
However, these leaks have helped clear out a lot of confusion about the game, be it where the game is going to take place, who are we going to see as the new protagonists, and even some glimpses into the story of the game. But it has also sparked a series of new arguments and speculations about the game’s release, looks and so much more.
It seems these speculations and arguments are never going to end until the game is released, which I don’t think is coming out any time soon, not after this nasty hack. I guess we will have to wait another couple of years before we finally get an official release date for GTA 6.
