God of War Ragnarok’s Latest Weapon: The third and final weapon in Kratos’ arsenal for his Norse quest can be found in the third of God of War Ragnarok, the Draupnir Spear. Naturally, developing a new weapon for Kratos was a significant challenge for the Santa Monica Studio team.
Game director Eric Williams has discussed how the spear came to be, what ideas were scrapped, and why players couldn’t simply use Thor’s hammer. Williams stated in an interview with IGN’s Beyond podcast: “When we first started, in, I would say, the autumn of 2018, people were pitching anything (for a new weapon).
Mjölnir was undoubtedly on the table, but I wanted to go back and show who (Kratos) truly was. If he was going to be the one to lead these people into this conflict, I wanted to see that guy—the one we never really get to see.
He said, “We saw a little bit of it in Ghost of Sparta. He receives his weapons from the Spartans. We wanted to see it in the Norse mythology, so they send him a Spartan’s spear and shield, and you get to see that general a little bit.
Kratos thus receives a Norse-inspired version of the renowned Spartan weapon in God of War Ragnarok. A God of War weapon’s outward appearance is just the beginning, though. The Draupnir Spear’s gameplay and upgrading system have been fully created, just like the Leviathan Axe and Blades of Chaos. The phrase that would influence the team’s objectives for the weapon was the beginning of it all.
We have a few internal phrases for the weaponry that describe how we bake all the ideas in. The axe resembled a “frozen lumberjack,” too. And after that, the blades have always been this “ballet of fire” in this. I challenged myself to come up with the spear (combat designer Mihir Sheth).
Hey, come up with the term that people can support this, I was like. And then he had the thought, “Let’s just beat the door down,” he said. And that’s what he wanted the spear to accomplish. Not only was there this pokey thing that thrust, but there was also this item that smacked your face right in.
And that’s what (Kratos) does when you begin hitting the R1 and he begins stabbing; however, when he switches to coming from the blunt side, everything just crumples. And then you watch all those rocks erupt as you detonate it. You may also check God Of War Ragnarok Dev Accused Of Not Crediting Music Production Intern!

William’s quest for a weapon that would prove Kratos’ leadership credentials was connected to that design concept. It simply had a violent quality, but Kratos, acting as a general with a strategic mindset, imposed his will with great force.
Because you can’t just use that weapon to go berserk. You need to consider your actions. It is accurate. Its area of impact is restricted. We wanted to integrate so many elements—both from the combat and the storytelling—that it would be difficult to distinguish between them.
To Compare All Spears To, We Want To Create The Best Stick Ever
In the narrative, Draupnir, a self-replicating ring from Norse mythology, is used to manufacture the spear. But before the group decided to use Draupnir as the weapon’s foundation, they decided to have a self-replicating spear.
Williams remarked, “I began to think, well, if we want to have endless spears, we have to come up with some way to do this.” We can’t just make it gamified. We want it to be mentioned in the legend. And when we were discussing Draupnir, we said, “Oh, yes, it does replicate.”
This is a special one: #GodofWarRagnarok’s director Eric Williams came to the office to chat with @tamoorh and I about the game’s ending, biggest moments, and just how Sony Santa Monica pulled it all off. Featuring a cracking edit from @JeanLucSeipke https://t.co/kna1SB0GGA

And after that, I simply had one of those “hey, what about this?” peanut butter-chocolate moments in my thoughts. They respond by asking, “Are you serious? Do you believe we could accomplish that?”
Despite Draupnir Spear’s extensive skill set, one particular ability had to be removed. Williams said, “We even had a crazier thing. “Early on, I had a wind element that, upon detonation, would fracture into several rings and scatter shrapnel on the ground.
The wind would then pick that up if you were able to employ it, giving you a shotgun-pelting effect. However, it simply became out of hand to the point where the player was simply overburdened with concerns. Therefore, we decided to drop that concept.
Mjölnir, the fabled hammer of Thor, was one of the early concepts for Kratos’ third weapon, as was previously reported. Williams, though, was opposed to the proposal and preferred something far more unexpected.

He said, “The axe was made to be the counter to (Mjölnir). “It’s almost like the sword of good and evil. Therefore, (Kratos) uses the weapon justly. Thor uses the weapon to destroy giants and other such things. Therefore, we didn’t believe that Kratos and Mjölnir would work out well together.
In addition, I’ll be fully honest with you and say what I told the team: I thought it was too simple. It was anticipated. The common man could comprehend it. They could consider it. It wouldn’t be a surprise. However, the weapon we provided him with would be the one to surprise him.
The Santa Monica Studio’s narrative team was able to craft a narrative that made a new weapon that was built especially for Kratos and his end-of-everything campaign extremely personal to Kratos. With Mjölnir, it would not have been feasible to accomplish this.
Williams said, “If you think about his weaponry, they’ve been given upon him. That’s how the story is presented on how he obtains it, who he is. The blades are taken out of the lava river and placed in his hands. His wife presents him with the axe.
After finishing God of War Ragnarok, @lucyjamesgames and I sat down with game director Eric Williams to talk about all the key moments and characters. Really enjoyed hearing about how @SonySantaMonica approached storytelling. https://t.co/pEWw7xsTtm

That spear will be created specifically for him. It contains his blood if you understand what I mean. They prickle it and his entire background. If you pay close attention to that scene, the blood emerges as the Omega—that older form of him—first.
But what truly solidifies it is that he represents Sparta and is seen as the straightforward general who will take care of business. We gave that a lot of thought, and I also challenged the team, he continued.
I remarked, “Hey, let’s design the best stick ever, the standard by which all spears will be measured. And, if I’m being completely honest, I think ours rivals any that I’ve seen in a video game.
