Yakuza spinoffs, as evidenced by Like a Dragon: Ishin, take risks with their environments, and a future RGG game may take inspiration from Ghost of Tsushima and embrace fantasy.

Like a Dragon: After over a decade since its first release, the remaster of Ishin has brought the game’s story to a broader audience. The game takes the brand to an ambitious historical setting, yet it is heavily based upon real-life individuals and events, and the voices and faces of the characters involved may be recognized.

Series producer Ryu Ga Gotoku wants to expand the IP’s provided gameplay substantially, with the popularity of Like a Dragon: Ishin and the recent narrative direction that the mainline franchise titles have taken.

With this in mind, future Yakuza spinoffs might explore a more magical environment, fusing elements of Japanese historical mythology with a narrative-driven style reminiscent of the PlayStation game Ghost of Tsushima.

Like a Dragon: The Themes of Ishin and Yakuza

Ishin takes place in Japan in the late 1800s and accurately depicts the real-life geopolitical fight between the Shinsengumi and the growing rebellion from Japanese citizens loyal to the Emperor. Like a Dragon: Ishin is founded in reality because it features numerous historical individuals from actual history.

Of course, this is the norm for the Yakuza series, whose games often depict the story of bizarre but plausible occurrences in the Japanese criminal underworld. However, newer entries in the genre have actively challenged this assumption.

To give just one example, the most recent mainline addition to the IP, Yakuza: Like a Dragon, released in 2018, adapted the franchise’s primary gameplay to turn-based JRPG combat. While the premise of Yakuza: Like a Dragon is grounded in reality, the game’s direct combat heavily incorporates fantastical and mythological aspects, transforming ordinary foes into fascinating creatures.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon’s boss, fights were already metaphorically drenched. They might develop further if a Yakuza title were given a carte blanche to explore magical or legendary themes.

Future Yakuza games might cleverly combine these elements to create an experience similar to Ghost of Tsushima’s Legends mode, which takes place in a more historically grounded environment like Ishin, which is ideal for examining these subjects in depth.

Ghost of Tsushima and a Future Like a Dragon Title

Like a Dragon: Ishin, the 2020 film Ghost of Tsushima tells a largely realistic story of the life of a Samurai and has received widespread acclaim for its affecting and engaging storytelling. However, the Legends mode in Ghost of Tsushima allows players to work together to take on some of Japanese mythology’s most renowned and intimidating figures.

This training would be ideal for a potential spinoff like A Dragon isn’t shy to show its protagonists defeating formidable foes like tigers and bulldozers.

The series’ power fantasy may be explored to its fullest potential with a more imaginative backdrop. One possible aspect of gameplay for such a title is allowing long-time protagonist Kazuma Kiryu to battle the dragon tattooed on his back.

The Like a Dragon trilogy has dabbled in more magical elements, but a dedicated fantasy setting would provide an ideal opportunity to explore Japanese mythology in greater depth.

Like a Dragon: Ishin is now available for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
