You’ve spent dozens, if not hundreds, of hours in The Lands Between, but you’re almost done with Elden Ring. However, the forge you’ll use to burn the Erdtree in the Mountaintops of the Giants is blocked by the boss’s fight against the fiery Fire Giant, who is enormous, stodgy, and peppery.

It’s not easy to put out the flames of this red-headed terror, but with our Fire Giant boss guide by your side, you’ll be able to do it in no time.

Getting Ready for a Battle of Giant Proportions

You should be well-equipped for this battle at this point in the game since you should have access to nearly all areas. The Flamedrake Talisman +2 may be looted from the Dragonbarrow Cave in eastern Caelid, and the Dragoncrest Shield Talisman +1 can be uncovered behind the stone sword key gate at the Sainted Hero’s Tomb on Altus Plateau.

Although the Fire Giant’s attacks are devastating, you can mitigate their effects by bolstering your own fire and physical protections with these amulets.

A Fire Giant can be poisoned or affected by scarlet rot. You can slowly drain his health while worrying only about staying alive if you can combine these two effects. Incantations like Rotten Breath and Poison Mist are available to faith casters and may be acquired at the Cathedral of Dragon Communion and a scarab southeast of the Castle Morne Rampart, respectively.

Or, they can utilize good ol’ fashioned pots and pans to impart these destructive states. Poison Pots are a dish that can be made with the recipe contained in the Nomadic Warrior’s Cookbook, which can be obtained in the Smoldering Church. Crafting a Rot Pot requires the Nomadic Warrior’s Cookbook, which can be found in the Lake of Rot; if you haven’t been there yet, it’s a bit of a walk, so be sure to consult Polygon’s guide to Ranni’s questline.

Also, the Rivers of Blood katana, which you almost definitely got from Bloody Finger Okina when he invaded you at the adjacent Chapel of Repose, is a wonderful pick here as bleed works pretty perfectly on Fire Giant.

You can use the Swarm of Flies incantation to cause blood loss, and the Antspur Rapier to apply scarlet rot, both of which are mentioned in the Fire Giant article on Wikipedia. The former may be acquired from a hostile NPC named Maleigh Marais west of Shaded Castle, while the latter can be discovered in a cave north of the Palace Approach Ledge-Road site of grace underground in Mohgwyn Palace.

Don’t bother with that Frost skill of yours; the Fire Giant has incredible tolerance to cold damage, rendering it nearly ineffective.

How to Evade the Attacks of the Fire Giant

There are three stages to defeating the Fire Giant.

PHASE 1

As soon as you enter the Fire Giant’s range, the first phase will begin. In this stage, his strikes consist mostly of crashing his feet or shield down toward you. Once you learn the pattern, avoiding them will be second nature.

The vast arena may tempt you to call upon Torrent and ride forth into battle. But, you shouldn’t spend the whole fight atop your steed, as doing so will make it harder to avoid the Fire Giant’s blows. If you’re far away from the monster at the beginning of the fight or if he rolls away from you later in the fight, Torrent is your best chance for closing the distance.

You can expect Fire Giant to begin with the identical opening strike every time: dragging his shield down the ground to throw a tsunami of rubble your way. When riding Torrent, you can dismount just before an assault reaches you, effectively dodging it. From the ground, it’s easy to avoid; the terrain is very forgiving.

Also, try a level-up or respec to increase your vitality and health if this attack is one-shotting you. When you have a chance, use consumables or incantations to apply status effects like rot or poison.

Otherwise, the only phase 1 tactic that matters is making a beeline for Fire Giant’s left leg. As the huge guy’s limb appears to be bandaged and splinted, it’s safe to assume he had an injury there. You should use this to your advantage by pounding on it as hard as you can.

Locking onto Fire Giant’s left foot makes it tough to see what he’s doing and makes it far too difficult to dodge his blows, which is why a lot of players start to have trouble at this point. For this reason, it is counterintuitive to lock on for the majority of this battle. You shouldn’t require target lock if you’re aiming for the foot, as it’s a rather sizable target. The mobility of your camera also allows you to keep an eye on your boss and predict when he’ll lose his cool.

The struggle against the Fire Giant should move from frustrating to easy with this tweak to your tactics. Whether he’s pounding his feet one after the other or lazily sweeping his shield at you, the boss’s attacks feature extraordinarily long wind-ups and are quite easy to evade.

PHASE 1.5

Nevertheless, there is a catch: if Fire Giant takes enough damage, he will learn some new attacks. This usually happens right around the moment that you hit his left foot hard enough to knock him down. Use the brief moment that he squats and favors his injured ankle to inflict maximum pain on him.

Then he’ll roll away from you as he reaches into his stomach-mouth, lights his hand on fire, and hurls a fireball from the Flame of the Fallen God in your direction. If it gets near you, it will explode. You can either call Torrent and gallop past the incoming fireball on your horse, out of its range or try to lure the ball of fire close to you so that you can dodge it.

It is at this time when the Fire Giant will unleash blazing sunspots all over the earth and launch fast-moving fireballs at you. They detonate after a few seconds, dealing damage, but you can continue harming the boss’s foot as long as you aren’t standing on top of one.

Phase 2

As his health drops below 50%, Fire Giant will finally snap and pull off his injured leg in a most awesome fashion. It grants him access to several new attacks, however overall this stage isn’t any more challenging than the first.

Fire Giant now simultaneously summons two flames from the Fallen God, instead of just one. They can still be avoided in the same way. The monster, like an enraged volcano, can throw his weight behind a rearing stance and expel pebbles of blazing fury from his chest. There’s nothing you can do but move away from him and use the time to heal, reapply buffs, cast spells, or throw consumables in his direction.

Throughout phase 2, you shouldn’t deviate too much from your initial plan. In order to effectively attack his lower body, you must position yourself under and behind him. Although his hands are vulnerable, you’ll take far more damage if you rush him in an attempt to target them; a more prudent strategy would be to move slowly and steadily.

In addition, he may spew a barrage of flames in front of him or launch more fast-moving fireballs at you from his hands. If you can manage to stay near his rear, you’ll be less likely to be attacked in this way. Remember that you can also stagger him, but that it usually takes too much time to follow up at his weak location.

A Question of Calling Upon or Not Calling Upon

During the Fire Giant encounter, you will need to decide whether you would rather have co-op assistance or the opportunity to ride Torrent, as is the case with all major bosses that let you do so in this game.

While Torrent can help you get closer to the monster, you can’t rely on him; dodging the Fire Giants’ assaults is more difficult when you’re riding a horse. However, bringing in reinforcements, whether from other players or from Warrior Jar Alexander (whose call sign is located just inside the monster fog), increases the boss’s health bar, making it much more difficult to take down.

Using spirit ash is a decent middle ground, giving you a slight advantage without increasing the boss’s health. In this phase of the game, any spirit ash will do; but, low-health ashes may be destroyed fast.
