Death Stranding: For the PlayStation 4, Death Stranding was developed by Kojima Productions and distributed by Sony Interactive Entertainment in 2019. It is the first game Hideo Kojima has worked on since he and Kojima Productions left Konami in 2015. For Windows PCs, 505 Games released its PlayStation game in July 2020. A director’s cut was released in September 2021 for the PlayStation 5, and in March 2022 for Windows.
After a global catastrophe has unleashed a legion of dangerous animals onto the world, the action of the game takes place in the United States. The player takes control of Sam Porter Bridges (Norman Reedus), a messenger entrusted with resupplying outlying settlements and reestablishing contact with the rest of the world via a wireless communications network.
In addition to Reedus, the game also has cameos by film directors Guillermo del Toro and Nicolas Winding Refn, as well as actors Mads Mikkelsen, Léa Seydoux, Margaret Qualley, Troy Baker, Tommie Earl Jenkins, and Lindsay Wagner.

Critics praised Death Stranding’s voice acting, soundtrack, and aesthetics, but had more mixed reactions to the game’s gameplay and story. Multiple prizes, including “game of the year,” were given to and accepted by the game. The game had sold 5 million copies by July of 2021. After the game came out, many observers saw parallels between it and the COVID-19 epidemic that broke out a month later.
There is no work being done on Death Stranding 2, a sequel for the PlayStation 5. Furthermore, a cinematic version is now in production.
Death Stranding Gameplay
Death Stranding is an open-world action game with some internet features that work in real-time but mostly on your schedule. Kojima calls Death Stranding the first of a new genre he calls “strand games,” which is defined by its emphasis on player interaction. Kojima likened the development of this genre to the launching of his first game, Metal Gear, which was first labeled an action game while being in what is now known as the stealth genre.
Play as Sam Bridges, a porter for BRIDGES, Inc. The player’s objective is to transport goods and connect multiple KNOTs, as well as scattered groups of researchers and survivors, to a communications network called the Chiral Network. The corporation and recipients provide feedback to the player based on their performance, such as whether or not the cargo was delivered and whether or not it was damaged in transit.
In turn, the player can utilize these merits to enhance their standing with various locales and personalities, as well as raise their stability and weight capacity (which can improve rewards). Both the player’s packing strategy and the total weight of their load have an impact on Sam’s mobility at each level.
Throughout the game, licensed music from the bands Silent Poets and Low Roar is used to complement and enhance various set pieces and periods of exploration. Kojima stated that music is used because it helps people relax “would complement this unforgiving but pristine natural scene.

Because of the similarities between Low Roar’s acoustic but digitally modern sound and the notion of Death Stranding, I also felt a connection to the band and the game.” After Ryan Karazija, frontman of the band Low Roar passed away in 2022, Kojima claimed, “Without [Low Roar], Death Stranding would not have been formed.”
Otherworldly monsters called “beached things” (BTS) and the MULE (a cult of rogue, bandit-like porters motivated by a fixation with cargo, who attempt to steal deliveries so they can transport them themselves) are the player’s primary antagonists. Timefall, the rain that surrounds BTs, accelerates the wear and tear on the player’s equipment and supplies. Sam’s suit has a robotic sensor called an “Odradek” that indicates the location of BTs, making them visible during a scan. BTS are generally invisible.
Since Sam is a Repatriate, if he were to die, he would be transported to an underwater dimension called the Seam from where he might “swim” back to his body and be reborn. When a BT kills and eats a human, it causes an explosion called a “void out” that leaves an impassable hole at the scene of the killing.
Players gain access to area maps and blueprints for crafting consumables and infrastructure like ropes, bridges, and power generators for recharging battery-powered equipment as they increase the reach of the Chiral Network.
The internet features of the game are based on the Network, where players can leave supplies, structures, and messages for other players to use and observe (albeit the structures will be destroyed by Timefall once some time has passed). Players can also help each other out by finding and retrieving items that have been misplaced during transport. The gamer has no personal interactions with any other players in the world.

Death Stranding Development
After a long corporate dispute as a restricted subsidiary of Konami, Kojima Productions shut down in July 2015 and reopened as an independent video game developer and studio in December. In the same month, Hideo Kojima stated that he would be working with Sony Interactive Entertainment, then headed by Andrew House, to develop a new PlayStation game.
A teaser clip featuring music from Low Roar was shown off by Kojima at Sony’s E3 2016 briefing. Photogrammetry and motion capture technology allowed the creation of the trailer. In it, Norman Reedus starred as the protagonist. Following the cancellation of Silent Hills, this is Kojima and Reedus’ second time working together on a video game.
Kojima and PlayStation 4 system architect Mark Cerny spent two weeks in January 2016 searching for a suitable game engine. Only two applicants remained, and one of them had already been used in the promotional video. Later on, it was revealed that Guerrilla Games was working on the project, contributing their in-house gaming engine Decima. To ensure the engine’s authenticity and verify the use of physically based lighting, the Kojima Productions meeting room was replicated in the engine.
In 2017, work progressed at full speed on the game. Kojima revealed a few days prior to E3 2017 that the game wouldn’t be featured during Sony’s customary presentation. Sony Interactive Entertainment America president Shawn Layden confirmed in June that Death Stranding was in a playable alpha state, however, he was unable to classify the game at the time.
RCA Records and Sony Interactive Entertainment released the Death Stranding: Timefall official soundtrack on November 7, 2019, and it comprises songs from artists like Chvrches, The Neighbourhood, Major Lazer, and Bring Me the Horizon.
In December at The Game Awards 2017, Kojima, Reedus, and del Toro all showed up to present a teaser. Kojima also mentioned that the third trailer was postponed from E3 2017 to the Game Awards because the team was unable to complete any performance capture or voice-over owing to the 2016–2017 video game voice actor strike.
When the game was still in development in February of 2018, Emily O’Brien and Troy Baker were added to the cast.
A brand-new trailer, featuring gameplay for the first time, was debuted at the event. Also, it was announced that Léa Seydoux and Lindsay Wagner will be playing roles. At Tokyo Game Show 2018, it was reported that Tommie Earl Jenkins will play a major role in the game and that Metal Gear series veterans Akio Otsuka, Kikuko Inoue, Nana Mizuki, and Satoshi Mikami, as well as Kenjiro Tsuda, have joined the game’s Japanese voice cast.
Hideo Kojima stated in March 2019 that he was personally testing and adjusting the gameplay, day by day, calling that phase of production “vital,” and that Death Stranding was slightly behind its release date schedule.

Trailers for the next films starring Margaret Qualley as Mama and Nicolas Winding Refn as Heartman was published in May of 2019. Characters played by Mikkelsen, Seydoux, Del Toro, Jenkins, Baker, and Higgs, as well as Amelie, were also named (Wagner). Trailer voiceover talent includes O’Brien, Jesse Corti, and Darren Jacobs.
Kojima later clarified that while Del Toro and Winding Refn were given “Special Appearance” credits, only their likenesses were used and other performers provided their voice and motion capture. The release date of November 8, 2019, was announced in the same clip. Kojima wrote a blog post explaining how “the true importance of forging connections with others” was the driving force behind the game, with the player’s objective being to “reconnect” a divided and disjointed society by building bridges and forming “new bonds or ‘Strands’ with other players around the globe.” Certain story aspects and themes were inspired by Kojima’s upbringing and the loss of his parents.
At that year’s Gamescom, two more trailers were unveiled, the first of which featured Guillermo del Toro’s “Deadman,” one of the game’s central characters, interacting with a BB (Bridge Baby), and the second of which introduced Margaret Qualley’s “Mama.” The game’s elements, such as the ability to urinate and carry parcels to remote delivery stations, were also introduced in depth in a 6-minute gameplay clip.
Canadian journalist and video reviewer Geoff Keighley appears in this video as a hologram who has a conversation with the protagonist Sam at the delivery station. The Engineer, played by Yuri Lowenthal, is modeled after the Japanese author Junji Ito. The film’s director was based on Jordan Vogt-Roberts, and Thomas Southerland was based on Edgar Wright. Likewise, Hirokazu Hamamura showed up as the Collector. Veteran Porter was voiced by Liam O’Brien and modeled after Sam Lake. Tommy Wirkola plays Phillip North.
Kojima released an 83-minute video discussing the game’s general gameplay elements and commented on it live during the Tokyo Game Show conference. There, Kojima stated his willingness to create a sequel, saying it would help establish the “strand game” genre even further.

The game officially completed development on September 26, 2019, according to an announcement made by Kojima Productions. 505 Games confirmed in October 2019 that the PC version would be launched in the middle of 2020 for Microsoft Windows, putting to rest rumors that had circulated as far back as 2015.
The 2020-07-14 release date has been reached. At the same time, during an episode of Conan, comedian Conan O’Brien disclosed that he had been digitally molded for a gaming character. Kojima Productions had invited O’Brien to their studio earlier that month.
On September 24, 2021, a director’s cut for the PlayStation 5 came out, and on March 30, 2022, the PC version was released. The release date for the PC Game Pass version of the game is set for August 23, 2022; it will include a number of unlockable items in the main game.
