Critique Of Isonzo: WWI shooters like Isonzo have a unique gameplay style, which is to their credit. One bullet can kill instantly in this historically realistic game. Players must be more serious. Every decision matters as bullets fly and poisonous gases fall.
Players familiar with Blackmill Games’ prior WW1 shooters (Verdun, Tannenberg) will know what to expect. Hardcore tactical shooting persists despite different maps and gameplay. Knowing the prior titles, I was ready for this task.

Isonzo Is Set In WW1’s Southern Front
Isonzo isn’t for everyone. WW1 shooters tend to be hardcore. Shooting someone killed them in 90% of my games. Rifles often kill in one shot, whereas pistols don’t. Nearly everyone died.
The game is centered around the Attack/Defense of choke spots across a wide landscape. Like many FPS, the invading army has a limited amount of soldiers, but if they complete a map, they can move on with refilled warriors.
Attackers must traverse through numerous phases, each with two chokepoints (A & B). Even if they’re down to one soldier and pass both, they’ll be refilled and carried on to the next part of the map.
Massive maps can take 30-40 minutes to read. The defense has endless troops, but they must battle wisely. Since many are in the mountains, the defense may have an unfair edge, but intelligent gameplay will see teams prevail and advance. Here are the Offense levels.
6th Battle of the Isonzo: Carso, Sabotino, Gorizia
I’ve played a few of them recently, including with the Isonzo community. Though I’ve mostly played versus bots, I’ve also played against humans. Player matches were more heated and thrilling than bot matchups. I could work with a team. The game has depth despite having few Offensives.
Isonzo Gameplay
This game centers on Offensives, where one side sieges the other. Players must lead the Kingdom of Italy or the Austro-Hungarian Empire to victory.
Players can Join Match to see available battles (48-player cap) or set up unique matchups. This has Offensive/Map and Advanced Options. If you do, you won’t earn progress, medals, or achievements.
Isonzo’s classes have basic kits and weapon load-outs, although more can be unlocked. Every class matters. They each have a unique skill. Officers aren’t for everyone. This lets all classes utilize each map, hopefully.
Isonzo Classes
Officers give orders and motivate soldiers. Can use many support techniques Riflemen are vital to achieving goals and defeating enemies. Engineers install static weaponry, cut barbed wire, and build barriers. These warriors focus on high-impact counterattacks. Mountaineers are expert infiltrators and scouts. Marksmen have accurate, deadly guns and sights.
Each lesson features obstacles and a progression meter. By playing a class and account level, you can unlock more battle weapons. Classes can equip more perks as they level up, but only one at a time. They reduce weapon swing and speed up bandage application. This is worth your time.
All team members are important, not just officers. Officers can drop bombs and release Phosphene and Mustard gas. Everyone has gas masks. Gas-filled environments require them. It doesn’t render them immune, but it slows toxins‘ effects.
Players have historically accurate bandages and other support supplies, but being shot kills me. I narrowly survived a few bullets. Bandages can heal allies. Don’t hesitate to save someone if you can if they’re tangled in barbed wire or shot somewhere non-fatal.
Friendly fire is activated. On several occasions, I panicked and penalized my squad -10 points. If you help secure chokepoints before running out of reinforcements, you can resume battle.
If you run onto the field before the battle starts or are in the wrong area when a map changes, you can be executed for deserting. You’ll get a timer and must move fast or be murdered for desertion.
Isonzo Squads Are Crucial
I didn’t use Squad in bot battles, but I did in PVP. As long as a member of your Squad (4-player group) is alive, you can respawn on them to help or return to your previous location. These vast battlefields are important to note. Isonzo is a stripped-down game with many small cities and mountains to fight on. You won’t know where shots are coming from. You must be careful.
I like that, though I prefer a minimap to observe nearby enemies. This felt genuine. Too close and slow withdrawal can tangle you in barbed wire. You must sometimes wear a gas mask and can kill allies. But teamwork improves battles. On the respawn map, you may check where your squad is and alter your class/kit.
Excellent Sound And Sights, But Dying Warriors Are Cursed
The main menu tune is great. It’s the only music in the game, which is fitting for a WWI conflict. Sabaton’s “The Great War” album would be a must-have. It’s theme-rich.
Isonzo’s gunfire and troop yells are great, however, I have one criticism. Soldiers’ dying cries are unpleasant. They were everywhere. These sounded weird and overdone. Given that it’s a battlefield, it was thematic, but it was too much.
Both groups’ Isonzo uniforms were meticulously designed. Buttons were historically accurate. I thought it looked better than prior games. I loved how the game maps looked, possibly because of the mountains.
Isonzo will certainly be a niche game, but that’s not necessarily bad. Sharp gameplay and amazing battlefields. As a sniper, I got kills and felt strong.
Final Words
Isonzo has unique gameplay. This historical game guarantees defeat. Be serious. Every option matters when there’s gunfire and deadly vapours. Blackmill Games’ World War I shooters feature hardcore tactical shooting despite new levels and gameplay (Verdun, Tannenberg). Titles were familiar.
