The Elder Scrolls is no stranger to either of these techniques of storytelling, but Skyrim fell short of the literary heights attained by Oblivion and Morrowind. Having said that, the Dawnguard DLC did include some incredibly intriguing mythology in the form of the Aetherium Shards and the accompanying quest.
Lost to the Ages brings you to several Dwemer ruins, allowing you to experience their degradation firsthand following King Gellir’s long-ago enslavement of the Dwarves. The story of the Shards is one of politics and battle. It prompted decades of civil conflict in Dwemer culture, finally resulting in the extinction of the race in Skyrim.
If all that story-telling crap isn’t your thing, the shards can also be utilized to construct some truly cool gear. However, you must work for them, which is why I’ve created this Atherium Shards tutorial.
We’ll go over the history of Aetherium Shards, where you can find them, and what you can make with them in this article. So saddle up and prepare for Skyrim’s most entertaining fetch quest yet.
Skyrim Aetherium Shards Guide
Aetherium Shards are a valuable material that can be used to craft the Aetherium Crown, Shield, or Staff. These relics are among the most powerful items in Skyrim, and they may be customized to your liking.
To make an Aetherium artifact, you must collect all four Aetherium Shards. The shards can be found in numerous Dwarven ruins throughout Skyrim, and they are guarded by formidable foes.
This guide will help you find and collect all four Aetherium Shards, as well as make suggestions on how to craft the right Aetherium item.
Obtain the Aetherium Shard from Arkngthamz
Arkngthamz is your average Dwarven dungeon. You’ll have to start at the bottom and work your way up. She’ll mention falling to her death at some point, and you’ll notice a log reaching out over the hole you just climbed up.
Katria’s bow, Zephyr, is nearing the end of the log. Make it a point to get Zephyr, one of the best bows in the game. Tonal Locks are used to unlock the door, and you must strike all five of them in the correct order. You die if you get the order incorrect. You could read Katria’s notebook and do some research to find out the combination for yourself, but we’ll save you time and effort by telling you.

Hit them in this order with a ranged attack, such as a spell or a bow, and the door will open, allowing you to enter Arkngthamz to find the Aetherium Shard. Katria will then tell you that she is on her way to find the other shards and encourage you to do the same.
Obtain the Aetherium Shard From Raldbthar
Skyrim has four Aetherium Shards in all. You’ve only gotten one so far, so there are three more to go. The placement of each shard is fixed, and they’ll be there before you start Lost to the Ages, so you might already have one or more of them. Most players, however, will not.
It makes no difference which order you collect the shards in. So go ahead and pursue whichever ones pique your attention. You’ll need all of them to gain access to the Aetherium Forge. Oh, and until you’ve identified the location of a shard, it won’t be marked on your map, so you’ll have to read Katria’s journal to locate each Dwemer ruin. Nobody has time for that, so I’ll go over each one immediately.
The first shard I’ll point you toward is at the end of the Raldbthar dungeon. This is the same dungeon where the first big Dark Brotherhood quest, Mourning Never Comes, takes place. You most certainly already have the Aetherium Shard if you investigated the dungeon after completing the mission. Otherwise, you’ll have to return to the highlands southeast of Windhelm.
If you still have Mourning Never Comes active, or if you finished it without getting the shard, the dungeon entrance will either have bandits or be completely empty. You’ll have to deal with a few Dwarven automatons otherwise.
Continue through Raldbthar until you reach a room with four buttons and a metal barrier in your way. The third from the left button will open the gate and allow you to go. You should ultimately arrive in a room with a pool of water and an elevated bridge. This place is littered with Dwemer equipment. All of these gears are clogged, either with human skeletons or Dwemer trash.
To lower the bridge, you must remove the obstruction from each gear, including one hidden in the pool of water. The bridge is guarded by a Dwarven Centurion, whom you must kill before progressing. You may, however, chew the Centurion by hitting the bridge’s lower and upper buttons. This will knock the Centurion into the water, where you can kill it from a safe distance with arrows or spells.
You’ve now completed the tough part of Raldbthar. Before reaching the end of the dungeon and the Aetherium Shard, you must eliminate a few more spiders and spheres.
After finishing up with Raldbthar and Arkngthamz, you’re done with Dwemer dungeons; thank Talos, unless you prefer it, in which case, you masochist, more power to you.
Instead of traveling to Mzulft, the shard is kept in a glorified shed near the dungeon’s entrance. Don’t ask me why this extremely valuable piece of magical stuff is kept there.
Inside the Dwarven Storeroom, there are three locked doors. Two of the doors have Apprentice locks, while the third has Expert locks. To obtain the shard, you must unlock at least two of these three locks, but Apprentice locks should be no problem at this stage.
Aside from the shard, the storage has some stuff, although it’s primarily scrap and junk. Nothing is too valuable or necessary to be anxious about missing.
Obtain the Aetherium Shard by Crossing Deep Water
The final shard is found in Deep Water Crossing. This is by far the most straightforward to achieve. It’s only waiting for a strong gust of wind to send it toppling down a precipice. You don’t even have to go to another load zone to acquire it.
The Deep Water Crossing is an old Dwemer stone bridge. You will notice a dirt mound increasing higher as you cross the bridge. Continue climbing the hill until you find an altar with some Dwarven equipment and the final Aetherium Shard.

The previous SOCOM game was released about a decade ago, and the SOCOM PS5 rumors haven’t stopped since. In 2019, it was reported that Killzone developer Guerrilla Games was working on a multiplayer-focused SOCOM revival, but nothing has been heard since.
One leaker, who recently announced ahead of time the upcoming State of Play Livestream on August 6, has suggested that SOCOM will return with a fresh iteration on PS5. While the SOCOM announcement would not occur during the State of Play event.
According to the leaker, this series rebirth has been in the works for quite some time and may even arrive alongside the PlayStation 5. Guerrilla Games, the studio behind Horizon Zero Dawn, is barely mentioned briefly.

Although the Lighthouse map has been available in Escape From Tarkov for some time, the community is still finding its feet. Unlike maps like Interchange and Customs, where the community has spent years determining the greatest – and most efficient – areas to plunder, Lighthouse hasn’t been around long enough to reach that point.
When combined with confusion over extract sites and a new type of adversary, Lighthouse becomes a particularly hazardous terrain for unprepared players. On Lighthouse, going into the incorrect location or failing to discover the proper extract is a quick recipe for death – and with so many other confused players meandering around the new map, calamity is never far away.

It goes without saying that if you’re going inside Lighthouse for loot, you’ll need to know how to get out again. What’s the purpose of hunting down all that equipment if you can’t get it out? To avoid missing an extraction or becoming sidetracked in-raid while searching for a route out, make sure you know where your nearest extract is located.

While you’re learning the loot places, spawns, and extracts, keep a map of the Lighthouse open and ready to help you navigate.
Fortunately, Lighthouse is pretty liberal with the number of extracts it includes. There are numerous exits to choose from depending on where you spawn; however, some of these require goods to reach.
The Road To Military Base V-ex costs 5000 Rubles per person to utilize. However, the Mountain Pass extract requires players to bring a paracord, a Red Rebel ice pick, and no armor vest.
The armored train will arrive between 23 and 28 minutes into each raid and will remain for around seven minutes before departing. Finally, the Side Tunnel extract requires a PMC and Scav to work together to escape the map.
Beware of the Water Treatment Plant
If you’ve played Lighthouse before, you’re probably aware that a terrifying new faction of NPC foes now inhabits the Water Treatment Plant. This AI, known as Rogues, is akin to Reserve’s raider group and will represent a far greater threat than typical Scavs seen elsewhere.
This can be especially difficult for BEAR players – or anyone traveling with a BEAR player – because Rogues will shoot anyone belonging to this group on sight. Because engaging these soldiers is dangerous, it is recommended that BEAR players avoid the Water Treatment Plant if they are not geared up and ready to pick off the Rogues.
Any USEC players will have an easier time in the region because Rogues will give them many warnings before opening fire. While this isn’t ideal, it allows USEC players a chance to get out of the situation – or at least avoid being mowed down by AI if they get too close to the Plant.
Learn to Avoid the Landmines
Lighthouse, like several other maps in Escape From Tarkov, is riddled with land mines. These are found on the map’s northern edge, past the river that divides the Lighthouse into two sections.
Almost the bulk of the mined sites are in and around the Water Treatment Plant. However, there are some strips of landmines in the mountain pathways to the east, south of the Road To Military Base extract.
If you’re still unfamiliar with the northern side of Lighthouse, keep an eye out for landmines listed on a map. If you’re under fire and don’t have time to continuously examine a map, a rough rule of thumb is that sticking to main highways will keep you safe from mines.
Stay Vigilant at the Southern Road Extract
Unfortunately, extract camping is nothing new in Escape From Tarkov, but some extracts are more deadly than others. One such location is the Southern Road Extract on Lighthouse.
Approaching the Southern Road pullout can leave a PMC feeling like a sitting duck due to the broad road going up to it and the sloping slopes to the north. Keep your guard up even if your path to safety appears to be close.
Continue to be attentive – keep an eye out for movement above and ahead of you, try to zig-zag up the road, and prepare your nearest escape route in case gunfire starts flying. Whenever feasible, try to stay on the northern side of the approach to the extract – you’ll be more likely to hear extract campers rustling in the brush, and any snipers waiting in the trees will have a more difficult time aiming at a closer target.
Don’t Go to the Lighthouse Itself Just Yet
Blasphemy, I know – the map is literally called Lighthouse, and you’re being urged to avoid it? It’s an obvious target for looting, especially because Battlestate Games COO Nikita Buyanov earlier stated that it would house an exclusive in-game trader.
Disregard that: the developer has recently confirmed that this version of Lighthouse is not the final version of the map, and certain elements, such as the trader, aren’t even in the game.
The only thing to be found at Lighthouse right now is a swift death – the approach is guarded by a highly accurate AI sniper who will quickly terminate your raid. In short, there’s no reason to visit the Lighthouse right now, though that will undoubtedly change in the future.
Cross the Map at a Slower Pace
Speed is everything in maps like Interchange, where getting to a hotspot first can mean the difference between a graphics card and a capacitor. That technique is more likely to get you murdered in Lighthouse.
You can’t predict where other (likely lost) PMCs will appear, where players will prioritize loot, or even which way people will move after spawning. Lighthouse is a new map, and gamers are eager to explore it; nevertheless, the community is unpredictable and thus dangerous.
Reduce your odds of being startled by a random PMC by packing a good headphones and navigating through Lighthouse at a little slower pace than you would in other maps. It pays to be the one in command on a map where people are still scurrying about like headless chickens.
Don’t sprint around corners, keep your ears open for movement, and don’t let your guard down in the map’s quieter parts. With those six strategies, you should be well-equipped for more tremendous success in Lighthouse.
Don’t be disappointed if you find yourself dying a lot: thoroughly learning a map takes a long time, and as we mentioned above, Lighthouse is significantly more deadly than most maps right now. In Escape From Tarkov, players explore multiple maps while looting, shooting, and completing objectives in a war-torn world. However, not every map is as tricky as the next, with some including somewhat easier layouts, opponent spawning, and extracts – spots where a player can depart the map once finished.

The Lab
The Lab is the most challenging map in Escape From Tarkov. It’s difficult to even get into, needing a keycard that only allows a player entrance once before they must track down or purchase another keycard. Once on the map, the player will be constrained by a highly protected environment, with the best stuff concealed behind closed doors.
There are no scans in The Lab. However, Raiders can spawn, which are fierce, sophisticated, scat-like adversaries with razor-sharp shooting abilities. It’s a PvP battlefield unlike any other, encouraging players to massacre one another for the greatest treasure, and with multiple floors and a difficult-to-understand architecture, it’s not at all hospitable to beginner players. If a PMC finds itself loading into The Lab, it must be prepared for a fierce battle.
Lighthouse
Lighthouse is one of Tarkov’s newest maps, having been released toward the end of 2021. It’s a big, sprawling setting with an industrial zone, a long beach, chalets, and impenetrable forests that are difficult to comprehend and conquer. There are numerous exfil sites, but they can be challenging to locate and can spawn some of the game’s most formidable foes.
There are lots of formidable foes to get into a fight with, from being a place frequented by The Goons – a trio of boss-like enemies – to boasting a community of Rogues. As of 2023, there is a new boss, Zryachiy, and the level is littered with landmines, challenging open spaces, and vicious scars. Lighthouse has a lot of chores to perform, but it doesn’t make it any less dangerous for even the most experienced gamers.
Reserve
The reserve is an abandoned military base stocked with extreme hardware and home to one of the game’s most difficult bosses. If a player does nothing but complete their responsibilities, they will take a long time to achieve Reserve. When they do, practically any assignment can be deemed problematic, providing distinct scenarios that go beyond simply eliminating scans in specific locations throughout the battlefield. It’s difficult, frightening, and absolutely not hospitable to newcomers.
Interchange
Even though it’s not difficult to learn how to use, Interchange is a relatively dangerous map. It’s a dark, dense setting that appears to encourage player-vs.-player fighting, and there’s a challenging boss – Killa – who can spawn practically anywhere on the map, making his actions incredibly difficult to predict.
Interchange is a challenging map, with scars that appear out of nowhere and a long drive to most extraction sites. There are specific locations on the map where players will congregate as soon they enter, which can end a conflict in minutes.
Furthermore, with a combination of long and short sight lines, it’s challenging to determine what kind of weapon a PMC should use, particularly if they’re a new player.
Shoreline
Shoreline is a challenging, wide-open setting with a competent boss, a spawn spot for The Goons – a trio of bosses – and some of the best opportunities to combat players. The resort is a ‘central place’ on the map where practically every player will be fighting for the best prizes.
Numerous early-game missions will send players to Shoreline early on, but it can be a daunting map. Due to the open nature of the field, the battle is frequently ended in a matter of seconds, with players being picked off as they cross significant gaps between cover. Extraction sites are generally easy to spot. However, they are pretty far away from where a player will naturally find themselves plundering.
Streets of Tarkov
Streets of Tarkov is the game’s most recent map, having debuted with the 0.13 update in December 2022. It’s a densely packed metropolitan setting, full of stores, residential buildings, hotels, and broad, winding avenues filled with abandoned automobiles and trams. It doesn’t appear very comforting at first, but the map isn’t all that challenging.
Killa and Gluhar are two bosses that can spawn on the Streets of Tarkov. However, their spawn rates are relatively low. Streets of Tarkov is an easy map to comprehend because all of the extraction sites are positioned along the game’s perimeter – even if a player gets lost, they may skirt the map’s edge and, chances are, they’ll find one. Streets of Tarkov is tricky – because it’s new, of course – but it’s not impossible. It has more treasure places than any other map and plenty of cover and buildings to lose other players in.
Woods

Customs is the ‘welcome map’ in the game for many Escape From Tarkov gamers. It’s where many of the first jobs and objectives can be done, and it’s a generally harsh setting. It’s a vast map, yet it’s straightforward to master the layout in a short amount of time. There are a few spots of interest that provide fascinating battle scenarios, but it’s ultimately where most Tarkov gamers start their trip.
