The next three World of Warcraft expansions, dubbed the Worldsoul Saga, were unveiled at BlizzCon 2023.
On stage, Chris Metzen announced the Worldsoul Saga, an epic plotline slated to take place throughout numerous expansions over the next few years, and stated that new content for World of Warcraft will begin to roll out faster than players are accustomed to.
This subplot “feels like the culmination of the first 20 years of our storytelling” and will set the stage for the plot’s future 20 years.
The first of these expansions, The War Within, will take you deep into the heart of Azeroth. The second expansion, titled Midnight, will take players back to the Old World to confront the horrors of the Void.
Finally, World of Warcraft: The Last Titan will transport you to Northrend to witness the return of the Titans and unearth a “vast conspiracy” spanning back through the world’s history.
The most recent World of Warcraft expansion, Dragonflight, was released in 2022. Following the underwhelming reception to prior developments such as Shadowlands, many players saw Dragonflight as a breath of new air.
Blizzard maintained the positive feelings a few months after the expansion’s release by announcing the return of WoW director Chris Metzen as a creative advisor, and more recently, Metzen was appointed to executive creative director for the whole Warcraft franchise.
As the BlizzCon 2023 schedule progresses, we’ll discover more about the forthcoming WoW expansion. The opening ceremony will be followed by a more extensive ‘what’s next’ showcase for WoW, and tomorrow, November 4, we’ll also get a WoW ‘deep dive.’ Both of those events will very certainly reveal a lot more about the next expansion’s content.
