Witcher 3 Next-gen Update Issue: Today marks the PC and console debut of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s free next-gen update, but for many of us, things haven’t gone so swimmingly.
Steam reviews allege the update has caused everything from lower frame rates to difficulties with the HUD, and users have already taken to Twitter, Reddit, and Steam to share their stories of performance woe since the update went live.

The RPS Treehouse has also been experiencing issues since the 4.0 update was installed, with very variable frame rates on the new max settings even with an RTX 3080. This is true even when ray tracing and other new graphics capabilities are disabled.
While James, our hardware editor, and Liam, our video buddy, have more to say about The Witcher 3‘s performance issues, just now we’ll show you how to keep Roach operating smoothly and avoid having the next-gen update spoil your Witcher 3 experience.
The next-gen update for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is coming on December 14th, free for everyone who already owns the game.

From today on, everybody who has The Witcher 3 should be able to download the next-gen 4.0 update, but until it has been fixed, we recommend playing the Classic edition. To do this, switch to the Classic version, which can be found on Steam and GOG.
Visit GOG’s Preferences and click Manage Installation to configure your game’s installation. Then, under the Configure menu, pick the Classic beta branch to revert to.
Select the same Classic branch from Steam’s drop-down menu found under Properties > Beta. This should allow you to revert to the original 1.32 version of the game.
Even though 1.32 predates today’s next-gen 4.0 update, the PC version of The Witcher 3 is fairly stable without any more patches.
I booted up the game without installing the update and had no issues. At the moment, that appears to be the best course of action, as reverting the game after installing the update may prove to be a mildly embarrassing experience.

Some gamers reported significantly decreased frame rates after installing the 4.0 update for the PC edition. Yesterday, a gamer who posted on The Witcher subreddit claimed to be obtaining 100-120 frames per second when exploring Novograd at 4K resolution, making the game unplayable in their opinion.
We are aware of the issues PC players have been reporting since last night's release of the update. We are actively investigating all of the reports and will be providing an update on particular issues as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience!

Despite using the most recent drivers, after the update, it reduced to 45 frames per second. I have an RTX 3080 if you’re interested. With RT on, I traveled to Novigrad. A user commented, “I was definitely below 30fps regardless of the resolution.” “I can’t believe it!”
Even though The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Complete Edition is now available on Steam, GOG, and the Epic Game Store, you should definitely wait to play it until CD Projekt Red releases another patch.
