Witchbrook, which was first revealed in 2016, is an upcoming life simulation and social RPG that puts you in the shoes of a witch in college (you could call it Big Witch Academia).
The similarities are unavoidable—pixel art, farming, romances, and mystical combat against forest creatures will all be part of your academic journey, developed by Chucklefish. This indie studio helped launch Stardew Valley.
If all goes as planned, you will follow in your ancestor’s footsteps and become the resident witch of the tranquil seaside village of Mossport.
Witchbrook is already one of Steam’s most-wanted titles, and it has a chance to be the next blockbuster cozy life sim alongside Eric Barone’s Stardew sequel Haunted Chocolatier. Here’s everything we’ve learned so far.
Witchbrook Release Date Switch
Despite its lengthy development, we don’t yet have a release date for Witchbrook, but we can presumably expect it around 2023 at the very least.
According to Chucklefish, Witchbrook was first coded in the computer language Rust before switching to an in-house engine created for Wargroove. That game was released in early 2019, so it’s reasonable to infer that Witchbrook’s development began (or resumed) after Wargroove was completed.
For now, here is the latest update from developers:

Studio Chucklefish gave another explanation for the lengthy development in a 2022 Reddit AMA: “Chucklefish is a zero-crunch studio.” In 2019, the independent developer was chastised for using unpaid contributors on its first game, Starbound.
The studio did not explicitly admit it was incorrect but did state that “Chucklefish has grown considerably into an indie studio with a strong emphasis on good working practices, providing a welcoming environment for all employees and freelancers.”
We’ve recently received some new updates from the Witchbrook creators after a long period of silence. Chucklefish updated the game’s Steam website in June with fresh pictures, features, and information. If you’re entirely obsessed, you can even add the game to your wishlist.
What Platforms Will Witchbrook Launch on?
Witchbrook will initially be available solely on PC. In an interview with Red Bull, Chucklefish founder Finn Brice stated that the team’s first goal was to release Witchbrook on PC but that a console or Nintendo Switch version was not ruled out because the game was still in early development.
Brice went on to explain, “We’re all massive fans of the Switch at Chucklefish and would ideally see all of our major projects hitting the platform in the future.”
Because the game is still in early development, we won’t know the Witchbrook platforms for quite some time. When we discover more, we will update this story.
Are There Any Witchbrook Trailers?
Believe it or not, no. So, sort of—Chucklefish released a short video showing Witchbrook’s previous version in 2017 before it launched production on a new engine and moved to an isometric perspective. That no longer represents the game as it currently exists, and we don’t even have a teaser trailer.
