Valkyrie Elysium Demo Makes A Great First Impact

There is almost no time left till the release of Valkyrie Elysium, the new action RPG developed by Soleil Ltd. and published by Square Enix. The new Valkyrie Profile may seem similar to those who are acquainted with the original, but there have been major revisions to the tried-and-true concept.

Thanks to Square Enix, ComicBook.com was able to play a preview build of Valkyrie Elysium on the PlayStation 5 before the demo’s official release. I finished it in a little over an hour, so it’s not exactly a marathon, but it does provide a solid overview of the game’s mechanics (though not its plot).

Given the long gap between this and the last official Valkyrie episode, it’s not surprising that Valkyrie Elysium takes its own route. If you add the Nintendo DS, then Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume was released for consoles in 2009. Whereas the first Valkyrie Profile, released for the PlayStation in 2000, was a fairly normal JRPG for its day, its sequel was a tactical role-playing game. As an action role-playing game, Valkyrie Elysium avoids both of these tropes.

It’s probable that Valkyrie Elysium will be the first game in the Valkyrie series that many people will play. Given the profusion of action RPGs like Nier: Automata in recent years, the fact that it departs mechanically from what the past games have been like isn’t exactly a significant worry. The change will likely make it feel more familiar than if it had attempted to replicate the original’s charm in every detail.

However, it takes the same Norse mythology-infused story structure. Odin sent a Valkyrie, who remains unidentified in the promotional materials and demo, to stop Ragnarok and cleanse the souls of the corrupted. In what seems to be a final step, these spirits combine to become an einherjar, a spectral being that the Valkyrie might call upon for aid in combat. These appear in the demo’s instructional areas and play a significant role in the demo’s fighting system, but they don’t seem to play a role in the demo’s plot.

The Valkyrie can only defend themselves with their skills and weapons. Gems and souls may be invested to further improve them, granting access to additional active perks like increased health or passive ones like the ability to chain attacks together. It is also possible to learn the Divine Arts, which are the equivalent of Valkyrie Elysium’s magic and may be used to inflict damage of varying elemental types.

The gameplay in the demo focuses on discovering your foes’ weak spots and exploiting them with a variety of weapons and elemental strikes. Different adversaries might have vulnerabilities to various weapons, thus targeting them with Lightning Bolt, for example, can stun them and make it easier to deliver damage.

While the sample only covers a small portion of the game’s introduction, it’s already evident that switching between them will be crucial to doing the most damage possible in Valkyrie Elysium. This is made easy by the fact that foes’ elemental vulnerabilities are clearly shown when you lock onto them.

Even though it’s difficult to predict how the finished video game will turn out from the demo alone, I’m looking forward to its release. Given its impending September 29 release for PS4 and PS5 and subsequent November 11 release for PC through Steam, it’s hard to imagine major changes. Combat has a pleasing assortment of powers that may be strung together to achieve a common objective, and the story’s prologue is fascinating if not instantly engaging.

If Valkyrie Elysium seems interesting, the demo should give you a good taste of the game. It won’t provide a comprehensive analysis, but the summary it provides should be enough to convince anybody who’s on the fence. It’s hard to expect much more from a free taste of a forthcoming video game than that.

Final Words

Valkyrie Elysium introduces many players to the series. Nier: Automata’s new gameplay isn’t a big issue given how prevalent action RPGs have become. This change may make it feel more like the original than if they were true to it in every manner.
