The Medium PS5 Gameplay
The Medium is a third-person psychological horror game in which players assume the role of Marianne, a medium with access to the afterlife. Having a foot in two worlds helps when trying to solve a problem. Her psionic skills can be employed defensively against enemies and offensively at recharging spirit wells.
The Medium PS5 Plot
It is 1999 in post-Communist Poland, and The Medium takes place there. Marianne, a spirit medium who aids lost souls in their search for eternal peace, has reoccurring nightmares in which a man shoots a little girl beside a lake. During her time of mourning for her foster father, Marianne receives a cryptic phone call from a man named Thomas who claims to be aware of her skills.
Thomas provides an explanation for the dream and offers insight into the source of Marianne’s abilities. But he’ll only talk to Marianne if she agrees to meet him at the Niwa Workers’ Retreat, a defunct communist-era resort in the Polish forest that was closed by the government after the Niwa Massacre.
Marianne discovers the resort manager, Thomas, and his daughter, Lilianne, were at the center of the Niwa Massacre, and that the resort has deep ties to the spirit world. Marianne meets Sadness, the spirit of a young girl, in the afterlife. Sadness warns Marianne of the Maw, a hostile and malevolent spirit that has managed to partially exist in the real world and was responsible for the Niwa Massacre by occupying human hosts and using their bodies to murder others, and is now hunting down Marianne to sate its hunger and escape Niwa.
Marianne keeps trying to help Sadness find closure by sending her to heaven, but she always declines. After having a series of disturbing visions, Marianne learns that Sadness is actually the ghost of Lilianne, a girl Thomas’s older and more reliable buddy Richard assaulted.
Marianne deduces from the evidence that the Nazis and the Soviets experimented on Thomas because they realized his abilities could be used to separate people’s minds from their bodies. Thomas was, in fact, a medium. After a while, Thomas made his way back to Poland and hid out in Niwa, where he started a family.
However, a Suba Bezpieczestwa agent named Henry ultimately tracked him down, detained him, and made him watch as he set fire to Thomas’ home while his children were still inside. After Thomas leaves Marianne at the hospital while he stays with Lilianne at Niwa, Marianne recovers from her coma to learn that she is actually his youngest daughter.
After the collapse of her house, Marianne digs down to a fallout shelter, where she meets Thomas’s afterlife self. He tells Marianne that Thomas locked up Lilianne in the bunker because she couldn’t control her abilities. Lilianne’s talents, however, spiraled out of control after she was raped by Richard, and the Maw was the result of her tortured psyche being given physical form.
The Maw eventually managed to escape the bunker, which led to the Niwa Massacre. Thomas’s ghostly counterpart is certain his human counterpart would never harm Lilianne, but he has no idea where Thomas is right now. With the Maw closing in, Thomas’s ghostly counterpart tells Marianne that she is the only one who can stop it and sends her away, ready to make the ultimate sacrifice to buy them some time.
With her mind still on Lilianne, Marianne sneaks out of the bunker and makes her way to the lake she had seen in her visions. While there, she meets Lilianne, who reveals that Marianne’s dream is actually a glimpse into the future rather than a recollection of the past.
Because the Maw cannot be expelled while she is still alive, Sadness, her spirit, refused to be sent off to peace, so she handed Marianne a gun and begs her to shoot her. Since the Maw can’t leave Niwa without a medium, Marianne hesitates before committing suicide and considers Thomas’ warning. When the Maw finally shows there, Marianne is forced to shoot, although it’s never made clear who she actually hits.
