Survivors of the Forest, Endnight Games’ breakthrough 2014 horror success, has a widely anticipated sequel in Sons of the Forest. Endnight appears to be following the successful formula of the original game by placing players in a lush forest where they must scavenge for food, build shelter, and use their wits to outwit hordes of deadly monsters.

At first glance, Sons of the Forest appears to be more of the same, featuring gorgeous forest settings, base-building, mutant foes, etc. Sons of the Forest will contain more in-depth building and crafting mechanics, in addition to new, more difficult opponents, thanks to Endnight Games’ extensive polishing of nearly every area of The Forest.

Larger Than-life Map of the Sons of the Forest

In particular, the massive size of the game’s maps demonstrates Endnight Games’ overzealous ambition for the sequel, which may have contributed to the game’s many delays. The open world of Sons of the Forest is rumored to be four times larger than its predecessor, and it will have typical climbs of dense flora and rocky beachheads and will be 100% explorable from the get-go, reflecting the massive scale Endnight is putting into its sequel.

Including Support for Multiplayer at the Release

In contrast to The Forest, the future sequel will ship with co-op support built in from the get-go. Teaming up to explore the wide island and find resources adds a new layer to the game, as you’ll have to rely on your companions for your own survival. Because in our wonderful but dangerous world, solidarity is essential to survival.

At the Time Being, Cooperative Play is Only Certified for a Maximum of Four Players

To that end, Endnight Games has stated that the launch version of the game would support a maximum of four players in cooperative multiplayer. As yet, there has been no confirmation that Sons of the Forest, like its predecessor, would support up to eight players in co-op. The Forest’s multiplayer mode was wildly popular, supporting as many as eight players in a tense struggle for survival at once. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that Sons of the Forest will support more than four players.

An Ai Sidekick is Included in Sons of the Forest

Those who aren’t jumping into Sons of the Forest with pals can still have a helpful AI buddy tag along to assist with the less exciting aspects of setting up camp. This AI sidekick goes by the name Kelvin and is reported to be a former member of an elite military unit who sustained significant brain damage. As such, he is mute yet willing to obey the player’s orders to perform menial tasks like felling trees and collecting logs.

Upgraded Artificial Intelligence

Sons of the Forest’s revamped AI for both allies and foes is another major addition. With the help of a new tool Endnight has dubbed “V.A.I.L.,” the AI in Sons of the Forest will be significantly more responsive to player actions, with NPCs and enemy factions displaying complex behaviors ranging from the expression of fear, anger, or frustration and the ability of those emotions to affect decision making to the launching of sabotage missions and coordinated attacks on the player’s base.

There Are New Kinds of Cannibals and Enemies to Be Aware of

In addition to enhanced artificial intelligence, Sons of the Forest features a slew of challenging new foes, many of whom would stop at nothing to eat the player. The game’s large island setting is populated by regular cannibals, and gameplay footage shows one running away when it sees the player holding up the skull of a murdered tribe member.

Nonetheless, there are cannibals that are only found in specific locations, such as cave cannibals. According to rumors, the masked cannibals in the sequel will be the most aggressive and violent of all the cannibals, showing their savagery not only to the player but also to other cannibals.

Forms of Mutants Never Seen Before

The teaser for Sons of the Forest shows off some of the game’s updated mutant foes, including a pair of conjoined mutants, a mutant with a stretched-out mouth, and a blob-like mutant. In a twist, Endnight describes the appearance of the tri-legged mutant from the first game as a mutant that is neither hostile nor friendly, but that can be scared away or persuaded into sticking around for unusual interactions.

Changeable Weather Patterns

Sons of Forest’s setting is further immersed by its dynamic weather system with changing seasons. In a game focused on survival, a change in the weather might have far-reaching consequences for the player’s success or failure, depending on factors like how difficult it is to forage for food in the winter. Players will need to make the most of the fruitful summer months, as they will need to stockpile after reliable food sources dry up, with the added danger of having food stolen from their camp by attackers.

Renovated Structural and Mechanical Components

While constructing bases will still be crucial, the sequel to Sons of the Forest features refined building mechanics. There is no longer a predetermined, ghosted contour of a building, but rather a freer, more inventive procedure. Blocks can be arranged any way the player sees suitable, and they will have greater control over finer details like carving out windows or refining the pointiness of fences.

Modification to the Mechanism for Digging

Trailers for Sons of the Forest have shown a shovel attached to the inside of a helicopter. Endnight Games have since confirmed that digging and shovels will play a role in Sons of the Forest, as shown in the teaser. Sons of the Forest will allow players to dig for cool and exciting items, unlike its predecessor, which did not have any diggable ground at all. This includes buried resources and concealed bunkers. Digging may also help with some traps or burying bodies, and it may increase the player’s capacity for construction.

Modified System for Creating Objects

Even the crafting system in Sons of the Forest has been updated, most noticeably with the addition of a 3D printer. Printing complex things and bespoke gear from materials scavenged over the island are just two examples of the far-reaching consequences of such a cutting-edge piece of technology. The 3D printer is already put to good use in the game’s trailer, creating a replica cannibal mask that can be worn to penetrate a cannibal stronghold.

Add More Weapons

Most of the weapons in The Forest were melee weapons, although there were also spears, bows, and a few projectiles. Melee attacks are still expected to be the mainstay of combat in Sons of the Forest, but firearms like pistols, rifles, and shotguns will play a larger role in the sequel. The game’s survival horror setting means that ammunition will be hard to come by, thus it will be up to the player to decide how aggressively to use their firearms.

A Significant Graphics Upgrade

The visual refresh is the first thing that stands out in Sons of the Forest. In spite of some sloppy design choices, The Forest was nonetheless a visually pleasing game. However, the sequel completely outclasses its forerunner in this regard. To compete with AAA games, Endnight Games has developed a universe with a level of detail that is unmatched.

Reduced Sanity System

Certain actions in The Forest increased or decreased the player’s sanity. While chopping off limbs and dining on human remains was proven to increase sanity, so was eating fresh organic cuisine, relaxing while listening to music, or napping.

However, the concept was not fundamental to The Forest’s gameplay, and its only noticeable impact was on the player’s ability to construct effigies. It’s evident that Endnight Games intended for the player’s sanity to have a significant impact on their experience at one point, but they’ve revealed they were unable to find a good way to include this into the survival horror gameplay of the sequel.

Exclusive to PC at launch

The Forest may be played on PC and PS4 right now. Sons of the Forest will initially release for PC, however, a console release is still up in the air. Although Endnight Games is clearly aiming high with this sequel, we can probably expect it to appear on consoles at some point.
