The Callisto Protocol Gameplay
Like Dead Space before it, The Callisto Protocol is a third-person survival horror game that will, at times, turn up the action to deliver a tense and nail-biting gaming experience. Check out the gameplay trailer down below to see for yourself.
There will be a wide variety of foes to face, and you’ll be able to use both far and close-quarters tactics in battle. But if you thought you could rely solely on your guns, you’ll be disappointed to see that ammo will be low the whole time.
Where do I sign up?

Even a single enemy is capable of causing you considerably more problems than you bargained for, so we’re looking forward to being scared and frustrated by this game when it launches in December.
The Callisto Protocol Premise
In 2320, the United Jupiter Company operates a penal colony named Black Iron on Jupiter’s moon Callisto. The player plays as Jacob Lee (Josh Duhamel), a prisoner at Black Iron, caught in the middle of an alien invasion planned by the warden.
The Callisto Protocol Development
Glen Schofield, who co-created the Dead Space series at Visceral Games, founded Striking Distance as a studio within PUBG Corporation (now PUBG Studios) in June 2019. The studio was founded to build a narrative-driven PUBG game.
Schofield added that when PUBG Corporation outlined their goal to expand the PUBG narrative, he already had the concept for The Callisto Protocol in mind and gave it to them. By May 26, 2022, Schofield said the game has expanded into its own plot and is no longer related to PUBG, albeit there are minor nods to the latter.
Schofield wanted the game to be realistic, so he chose Callisto as the backdrop. Schofield thought the moon’s subterranean ocean of water could be a game puzzle.
Steve Papoutsis, who co-developed Dead Space and led the series when Schofield left Visceral, Scott Whitney, and Christopher Stone worked on the game. 25 to 30 former Visceral Games and Sledgehammer Games personnel are working on The Callisto Protocol at Striking Distance. Journalists noted Dead Space-like themes and gameplay.
The game looks to use the same diegetic interface as Dead Space, with a holographic indicator around the prisoner’s neck indicating health and other statistics. Schofield stated the Dead Space similarities mirror his game’s style, and while he wanted to create something different, the allusions and inspiration came naturally from his creative approach.
Josh Duhamel will voice and capture Jacob Lee. Karen Fukuhara and Sam Witwer joined at Comic-Con 2022. Fukuhara will play resistance commander Dani Nakamura, and Witwer will play Prison Guard captain Leon Ferris.
Callisto Protocol is built for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Series S, and other platforms. Schofield wanted to “create the scariest game on next-gen platforms” like Dead Space was on the PS3 and Xbox 360. The game will use novel lighting techniques, 3D audio technologies, and the DualSense controller’s haptic feedback to immerse the player.
On this episode of Mastering Horror | The Callisto Protocol Docuseries, we look at humanity and its often helpless role in horror. Plus new looks at leads Jacob (@joshduhamel) and Dani (@KarenFukuhara).

Mark James, CTO of Striking Distance Studios, believed the game was realistic. Unreal Engine 4 is used. Skybound Entertainment has joined Krafton and Striking Distance to release the game since the concept has promise for other multimedia uses.

The Japanese release was canceled on October 27, 2022, due to the game’s violent nature and the developer’s refusal to make adjustments.
