Every Mario platformer game, 2D or 3D, appears to merrily reinvent itself to some extent, doubling down on the distinct delights that they bring me. Continuing in that vein, Super Mario Bros. Wonder is appropriately named since, well, it’s full of wonder.
Absolutely fantastic! Every frame exudes joy, from its bright colors to the Flower Kingdom’s ubiquitous talking flower, which never fails to encourage you as you run and jump through dozens upon dozens of stages that are altered by unpredictable and frequently grin-inducing Wonder effects and, more often than not, Mario’s antics.

There’s a lot to love about Super Mario Bros. Wonder, whether you play it alone or with up to three pals. Wonder quickly captures the attention. It dazzles because of its usual and welcome use of a wide range of hues, with a particular emphasis on vibrant blues, reds, greens, and yellows.
However, it is especially striking in motion. With compliments to Yoshi’s Island, it appears to be what you’d expect a proper Super Mario World sequel to be if it were produced in 2023 rather than 1995.
Mario Becomes Involved in Another Bowser Heist
What exactly is the Flower Kingdom? It’s a neighbor to the familiar Mushroom Kingdom, and it proved to be a refreshing location, owing to the abundance of new and exciting opponents for Mario to stomp on.
You can already guess the plot: Of course, a visiting Mario becomes involved in another Bowser heist, as the reptile exploits the land’s Wonder abilities to merge himself with the kingdom’s main castle, making life miserable for its citizens. As usual, the plot is paper (Mario) thin, and you know you’ll have to battle Bowsers Junior along the way.
Flower Power
But it doesn’t cast a shadow over the Flower Kingdom since the dozens of levels spread across six primary worlds – along with the Petal Isles center, which contains stages of its own – give so many distinct looks and wild hooks that the typically forgettable tale didn’t matter.
Most levels include at least two Wonder Seeds, one at the finish and another buried somewhere within it. Finding a Wonder Flower – sometimes planted in blocks, evil men, or secret regions – that causes something unexpected to happen is usually required to gain access to that hidden seed.
Unfortunately, I’m not allowed to show you most of the best ones. Still, Mario may transform into a rolling spiky ball, or the camera may shift to a top-down perspective, or Mario and his enemies may morph into stretchy ink silhouettes, or he may transform into a Goomba who can’t jump or attack, or there may be a dance party.
You never know what will happen next. As a result, I eagerly anticipated the Wonder effects on each stage. They’re so much fun to play that if I missed one in a level, I had plenty of motivation to go back in and get it. In a nutshell, the Wonders make the Game.

The Wonder Effects Improve Game
It certainly helps that each area contains whole different sets of enemies, largely new foes, but with some nods to both essential classics like the cloud-riding Lakitus and deeper cuts like the Pokeys from Super Mario Bros. 2.
Bulrushes are among the rookies who charge at you and cannot be defeated by traditional stomping. They can, however, be ridden, which Wonder cleverly takes advantage of. Meanwhile, the derpy-looking Maw-Maws appear lovely, calm, and innocent – until they spot you, at which moment their gaping maws open wide and will swallow you whole if you don’t jump very high, very fast.
Apart from their difficult-to-leap-over height, the Mumsies represent little threat. I never grew weary of latching onto their loose piece of cloth and unraveling them into oblivion. I hope we get to revisit the Flower Kingdom since I don’t want this new group of exciting new opponents to emerge only once.
