Star Citizen Squadron 42: Cloud Imperium Games, in their latest CitizenCon event, which streamed live yesterday, has chosen to disclose more information about Squadron 42 after keeping it under wraps for several years. Chris Roberts and the game’s director discussed a number of new features coming to Star Citizen during a lengthy interview.

Cloud Imperium Games announced a brand new flight system for Star Citizen in Alpha 4. X at CitizenCon 2952. There will be two parts to the new flight system. Both the Standard Control Mode (SCM) and the Quantum Control Mode (QCM) will be used, but the former will be used more for battle and the latter for traveling.
One of the biggest problems in Star Citizen right now is that ships move considerably quicker than they should during combat, making it extremely difficult to target foes, especially when using rail guns instead of missiles. This issue will be resolved with the arrival of the new flight system.
With the new system, your spacecraft will travel slower in SCM mode, but you’ll have much more control over it and find it much easier to navigate. All of the ship’s weapons, shields, and other defensive mechanisms will become available to the player in SCM mode. However, if you switch to QCM mode, you gain access to a unique boost mechanism known as Quantum Boost, which improves your speed even more.
Quantum Boost is an improved version of the present boost in ships and will enable high speed for a relatively short period of time; nonetheless, Quantum Travel will continue to be an essential component of ships for extended journeys. There will be a charge bar for Quantum Boost, and its duration will be under 30 seconds.
Quickly travel to a location potentially tens of thousands of kilometers distant by just pointing your ship in the desired direction and activating Quantum Boost. Instead of using the time-consuming regular Quantum Travel to spool and then lock on a target in order to flee a combat situation, this is a much better option.
However, moving to QCM mode comes with considerable danger. When you go to QCM mode, you can’t engage in battle in any way. Your shields will be destroyed as well. The designers dub the trade-off between the two modes “risk and reward.” Each time this happens, you’ll have to decide whether to stay and battle to the bitter end or disable your combat mode and flee.
Chris Roberts then moved on to the AI system, explaining that the terrible state of the AI in Star Citizen right now is the result of an outdated development system that is now unable to upgrade. The CEO of Cloud Imperium Games has stated that this will never occur with Squadron 42 because the company is creating the user interface from scratch.
The director of Squadron 42 has stated that the AI would make decisions based on their own internal reasoning, rather than just following a predetermined course.
A demonstration of Squadron 42’s AI behavior showed two enemy soldiers who only caught a glimpse of the player as he moved behind a crate. As a result, the enemy becomes suspicious and begins searching the area. In order to prevent repeating steps or missing anything important, they pool their findings as they go and discuss what they’ve found along the way.
The creators claim that this is a systemic behavior that is applicable in any environment and context, making it superior to scripted AI. Last but not least, we were shown the updated version of MobiGlass for Squadron 42, which provides a more organized view of communications, logs, missions, and character settings.

According to Chris Roberts, this MobiGlass implementation is geared at the military and will be utilized in Squadron 42, but a more comprehensive version is in the works for Star Citizen. Although it was not described during the show, observers noticed a potentially game-changing feature in Squadron 42 and Star Citizen: the ability to remotely retrieve a ship.
