Splatoon 3 Fans React to Ninja Squid Nerf in New Video!

A player of Splatoon 3 has shown off one of the changes made to the Ninja Squid ability in the latest patch. Players have been dissecting the meta online after the newest round of nerfs and bonuses to Splatoon 3, as they have with every release.

Gear in Splatoon 3 can gain powers as players level it up or useability chunks. Each piece of equipment has one primary slot and three secondary slots for a maximum of four abilities. Splatoon 3 has a wide variety of ability chunks, and some abilities can only be equipped in primary slots.

Ninja Squid makes players less visible when swimming at the cost of lower swim speed, while Stealth Jump conceals players’ spawn sites. Many Ninja Squid users combine it with the Swim Speed Up ability to compensate for the slowdown.

After the January 17 release of Splatoon 3 Update 2.1.0, Ninja Squid was severely nerfed. According to the update page on Nintendo’s website, players who have the Ninja Squid accessory equipped will remain visible for half a second after emerging from the water.

Players were confused by this part of the upgrade because Ninja Squid can only be used when swimming. A member of the game’s subreddit explained the skill adjustment by filming a video that showed how Ninja Squid was impacted.

After the patch, players’ stealth may be compromised by the momentary visibility of a small trail after exiting the water. An unofficial translation of the Japanese patch notes page seems to support the claim that Ninja Squid players would be more noticeable in the water.

The game’s simplification of Ninja Squid‘s interaction with Swim Speed Up is also made clear. Since Ninja Squid has been a part of the Splatoon series since its inception in 2015, players have had a lot more time to become used to it than they would have with a newer ability like Intensify Action.

A fascinating aspect of Splatoon 3’s meta is the challenge of making the game suitable for newcomers without making it too easy for veterans. It’s no secret that Splatoon 3’s target audience is far younger than that of games like Battlefield and Overwatch 2 Battle Olympus, which means that what works well in other shooters could not translate well into Splatoon.

Some have claimed that Splatoon might benefit from taking cues from games like Call of Duty Warzone 2 Bug, but it’s important to note that the game’s distinct identity comes mainly from how it differs from other titles in the genre. The third installment of the popular splatting game is now playable on the Nintendo Switch.
