Sony Patent for PlayStation Feature: A Step Towards Reliving Favorite Gaming Moments

Often, games contain a smattering of memorable moments that we may wish to relive for whatever reason, whether they are exhilarating cutscenes or great gameplay setpieces. However, depending on the save structure of the game, obtaining these moments again can be a considerable effort.

However, Sony is now developing a new function for PlayStation consoles that would generate points throughout a game, similar to chapter breaks on a DVD, and allow you to replay the game from these locations whenever you want, making it much easier to relive those favorite moments.

The new method, according to a patent filed on November 2 and noticed by Exputer, would allow users to re-experience specific cutscenes and gameplay at specified times during a game’s campaign.

According to the document titled “Content Streaming With Gameplay Launch,” the system will generate these “trigger points” as you progress through the game. Of course, some games already divide their games into missions or chapters and allow you to replay any of these bite-sized bits.

However, with Sony’s new patent, these areas would be included in every game, allowing you to easily revisit your favorite moments or maybe make different choices in games with branching routes.

Instead of having to replay a whole game to relive a particular moment that truly spoke to you, you’d be able to start up the game, select the chapter you want, much like a DVD’s chapter select screen, and pick up from there.

Some games already include a feature like this. One such game is Remedy Entertainment’s time-bending third-person shooter Quantum Break, which allows you to replay specific chapters without having to complete the entire game.

Other games with comparable features are Quantic Dream’s narrative adventure game Detroit: Become Human and Supermassive Games’ interactive horror drama Until Dawn.

For the time being, this is only a patent, so it’s unknown whether or not Sony will ever implement the feature, but the option to jump back into our favorite games at essential places throughout sounds like something that would go a long way toward making games far more replayable.
