The protagonist dies repeatedly, but each time they are revived by a mystical talisman and given a new lease on life, they also age and become more powerful while losing some of their health. When the player’s character reaches a certain age, they may perish for good, at which point the player must start the level over, starting at the same age as they were when they died.

The PC, PS4, and PS5 versions of the game came out on February 8, 2022; the Nintendo Switch version followed on November 8, 2022. It sold over 1 million copies in its first month on the market and was met with mostly excellent reviews, with a particular appreciation for the game’s combat, settings, and story.

Sifu Gameplay

As a third-person action beat ’em up, Sifu is a lot of fun. The game features over 150 different moves based on the martial art of Bak Mei kung fu. Combos allow players to link together basic offensive maneuvers, with some providing additional tactical chances, such as knocking down or stunning adversaries.

A “structural gauge” is available to the main character and all antagonists. At full, these characters’ defenses will collapse, leaving them open to devastating kill blows. It is possible for players to block attacks, but doing so will progressively drain their gauge. Players can also choose to parry an incoming blow or dodge an attack.

If the player parries well, the opponent can be stunned or thrown in a certain direction. In this game, you can use your surroundings to your advantage, improvise new assaults, or switch up your approach if you’re up against a particularly tough foe.

The player may use things found around the level as weapons, such as kicking enemies off of ledges or using them to block projectiles. Sometimes, the final foe in a combat area will go crazy and become a de facto miniboss. Depending on the player’s word choice, they may be able to avoid physical conflict entirely when given speech alternatives.

When the player dies, they are mysteriously revived in the same location but several years older. It’s true that as the player character ages, their attacks get more devastating, but they also lose health. When the next death occurs, it will be too late to resuscitate, and the game will be over.

To recover health and get access to new abilities, players will find shrines along their adventure. In addition, they have the option of going to a kung fu school, or “Wuguan,” to hone their abilities in between classes.

However, it is possible to permanently unlock improvements such that they are always available at the start of each run, and the player is not required to worry about losing their abilities when their character dies. The player’s progress across numerous runs is recorded on a “detective board,” which may reveal hidden places or provide access to alternate routes.

Sifu Development

It was created by Sloclap, who launched their first fighting game, Absolver, in 2017. The team behind Sifu decided against adding multiplayer because they would rather devote their time to polishing the single-player experience. The game was inspired by Jackie Chan’s kung fu movies, in which Chan often takes on and defeats hordes of foes on his own.

Cantonese for “master” is “sifu,” and the game’s fighting technique is modeled around Bak Mei. Benjamin Colussi, a master of the Bak Mei style of kung fu, was advised by the team to verify accuracy. The game’s aging system symbolizes “mastery via practice,” a central tenet of kung fu.

The development team felt that if the game were too easy, players would not feel like they had accomplished anything, therefore they made it a point to implement a steep learning curve and make the game difficult.

In February 2021, at Sony’s State of Play Livestream, Sloclap revealed the game to the public. The game’s release date was pushed back from 2021 to 2022 so that the developers could spend more time perfecting it and not burn out.

On February 8, 2022, Sifu was launched for Windows on the Epic Games Store, PS4, and PS5, with the Deluxe Edition granting early access to the game for 48 hours and including a digital art book and the original soundtrack composed by Howie Lee. Published by Microids, the retail version of Sifu: Vengeance Edition was made available to consumers on May 3, 2022.

In April 2022, Sloclap announced a series of content updates, the first of which included new outfits, an advanced training mode, and difficulty options like an easy mode called “Student,” where enemies are more forgiving and the aging mechanic is significantly downplayed, and a hard mode called “Master,” giving players a challenge far more punishing than the original difficulty setting, which is still in the game but is now known as “Disciple.”

In honor of the 2003 South Korean neo-noir action film Oldboy, a special outfit titled “Young Man” was released only for the Deluxe Edition.

New clothes and a revamped score system were included in a free update to Sloclap on August 31, 2022. Additionally, it altered the gameplay by introducing new features like endless health and unbreakable weapons.
