Rare’s pirate game launched on PlayStation 5 on April 30, 2024, and as of October 2026 the PlayStation Store lists it for PS5 only. PS5 players can crew up with friends on Xbox and PC. Can you play Sea of Thieves on PS4?
No. Sea of Thieves is available on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC and PS5.

How a Microsoft game reached PlayStation
Sea of Thieves is Rare’s online pirate adventure. It launched on Xbox One and Windows PC in March 2018.
Its Pirates of the Caribbean crossover, A Pirate’s Life, arrived on June 22, 2021 and brought a big wave of interest. Many PlayStation owners wondered whether they would ever get to play.
Rare is owned by Microsoft, and Sea of Thieves was one of Microsoft’s own games for its first six years. That changed in February 2024, when Microsoft confirmed four of its games for other consoles. More recently, Playground Games confirmed that Forza Horizon 6 comes to PS5 on January 26, 2027.
Pentiment and Grounded were announced for PS4 as well as PS5 and Switch, while Sea of Thieves was confirmed for PS5, Engadget reported.
Can PS5 players sail with friends on Xbox and PC?
Yes. Crossplay, which lets people on different systems play together, connects PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC, according to GamesRadar+. That includes the Windows and Steam versions.
PS5 players link a Microsoft account. That account also carries existing progress over from Xbox or PC.

What’s new on the seas in 2026
Rare is still adding seasons. Season 20 arrived on June 18, 2026, and added Custom Seas, a mode built around customization tools.
Season 21 followed on September 17, 2026. It expanded Custom Seas options and added a rotating roster of Live Events, according to the official Sea of Thieves site.
