When a game features online multiplayer, most gamers expect some form of crossplay or cross-platform functionality. These capabilities allow you to play online with a friend who has the game on a different platform, regardless of whatever platform you’re playing on.
Cross-platform titles have grown in popularity, prompting users to check to see if games contain them before purchasing them. It’s the same question Risk of Rain fans have for Risk of Rain Returns. Can you fight the Lemurians on the Switch with your pals if you have the game on PC?
Is Risk of Rain Returns Crossplay?
Unfortunately, Risk of Rain Returns does not support cross-platform play. When you’re in the main menu and choose to start an online co-op session, you’ll only see players on the same platform as you, whether it’s the Switch or Steam.
In terms of crossplay, if you’re a PC player and decide to pick up the game on Switch to play with friends, you won’t be able to access your saved data.
Fortunately, there is a local co-op, which means that up to four players in the same room can all play together as long as there are enough controllers on the PC.
If everyone has a copy of the game on their Switch and Local Communication is enabled, wireless play can take place in which everyone joins the lobby from their consoles while playing in the same room. When you’re finished, you can leave and let everyone else have fun.

Does It Have Cross-platform Progression?
Risk of Rain does not support cross-platform progression either. There is no mechanism to connect the Steam and Switch versions, and there is no information on whether it will be introduced in the future.
If you’ve never experienced cross-platform progression in a game, it’s like having a universal save game for your favorite titles. Play on your PC first, then on your phone while riding the bus, and finally on your console at home.
Your progress unlocks, and prizes are all saved in the cloud, ready for you to resume where you left off on any device you want. Again, there is no news on whether this functionality will be offered in the future.
