Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart: showcases the best qualities of recent Sony games. It’s the best PlayStation-exclusive game since “Bloodborne” in 2015.

The interpersonal drama in “The Last of Us” is believable and heartbreaking; “Rift Apart” has the same quality. Like the other recent PS5 exclusive, “Returnal,” it features a frenetic, dodge-and-shoot rhythm and screen-filling particle effects.

The effortlessness of Ratchet’s charisma and charm would make Nathan Drake of “Uncharted” feel insecure. As expected, “Marvel’s Spider-Man” devs Insomniac Games put its expertise to use in this platformer, staging spectacular set pieces, unlike anything we’ve seen before.

There are times when it makes me think of the best games I’ve played on other platforms and in other genres. In the role of Ratchet, I traveled to the desolate and magical planet of Sevali and blasted my way around it like I would a planet in “Destiny.” Like the typical video game tendency to portray wyverns as fighter jets, I rode a fire-breathing dragon across the sky and between enemy ship formations as Rivet, Ratchet’s alternate reality counterpart.

At some point, hostilities escalate into all-out war, and the game’s enchanting creature designs and dynamic animation make it easy to picture a futuristic “Halo” game’s bustling, action-packed battlefield. Realizing I was playing the anti-climactic conclusion of “Avengers: Endgame,” with additional dimensional rifts opening to release troops upon you, was a jarring realization. As an alternative to Thanos-facing portals of Marvel’s heroes, we have two lovable moggies defending Earth from an endless swarm of extraterrestrial invaders.

This alone makes it easy to suggest “Rift Apart” to just about anyone, as it is the first major game to be released specifically for the current generation of consoles. However, the game’s graphics and writing push it far above the series’ previous peak.

The incredible animation is where we should begin. The Ratchet and Clank series has quietly led the charge toward the long-held goal of video game graphic quality exceeding that of Pixar films. The original titles were already the best demonstrations of the platforms’ capabilities, and their development team included PlayStation console architect Mark Cerny.

In comparison to Ratchet’s wide-eyed, grin-widening eagerness, Rivet’s cautious nods and a tight-lipped smile on the PlayStation 5 belie her unwillingness to trust others. Thus, the animation accomplishes what actors are tasked to do: convey meaning beyond words.

Although Insomniac has always worked with the best animators in the gaming business, the release of “Rift Apart” solidifies the studio’s position at the forefront of cutting-edge animation techniques. Whether it’s a robot or one of the last remaining Lombax, an extraterrestrial space cat race, Ratchet and Rivet are upholding a proud cartooning tradition by giving each of their creations a unique personality through a colorful array of expressive features.

Neither the genre nor the medium is significantly advanced by “Rift Apart.” The gameplay loop Insomniac developed for the second sequel, “Going Commando,” is refined instead. This is great news for the series legion of fans who consider Ratchet & Clank to be the best platformer series on this side of Mario’s universe.

The game’s central gimmick, rifts between dimensions, promised a lot of fresh ideas, but it falls well short of even 2007’s “Portal” in terms of playfulness and originality. Rifts serve primarily as a means of transportation across levels, allowing you to either swing to “open rifts” like grappling points or warp to an entirely new area. Other than that, it’s a neat trick with visuals, made feasible by the PS5’s technology.

Where it falls short in terms of gameplay novelty, it more than makes up for its near-perfect execution. The controls reached their pinnacle on the PS2 and haven’t changed since. Collecting and upgrading the game’s 18 unique weapons may be a lucrative pastime. The nine planets each have their own unique culture and experiences that are worth remembering.

On Rivet’s home planet, the locals all go by the name Mort and have charming Minnesotan accents. There’s the mining facility with the nervous workers, which is reasonable given how close their drilling activity comes to destroying the world.

At the player’s discretion, the story switches between Rivet and Ratchet, with the former exploring one region of space and the latter another. Dr. Nefarious, a popular villain, dragged the heroes into a universe where he has already won and controls as an emperor, and now they must fix the interdimensional mess he left behind.

To me, “Rift Apart” illustrates and instills confidence in the pacing of presenting two different heroes working separately toward the same goal, much like a dry run for the inevitable Spider-Man sequel with more than one web-slinger. Given the concept of parallel universes, it makes it obvious that taking control of Rivet is functionally identical to doing so with Ratchet.

In keeping with franchise norms, both Clank and Ratchet’s new artificial intelligence sidekick Glitch receive unique features throughout the game. Puzzles reminiscent of “Lemmings” force Clank to direct all possible versions of himself toward a common goal in order to solve the dimensional issue. Glitch is lovable in all her awkward self-consciousness, and her small part in the story became an encouraging example of tenacity and resolve.

Mark Mothersbaugh, founder of the band Devo and composer of the film’s score, uses synth-driven brass instruments reminiscent of those in his “Thor: Ragnarok” scores to create an otherworldly soundscape. While original composer David Bergeaud’s sample-heavy, breakbeat compositions will always be missed by fans, Mothersbaugh pays tribute to those older games by preserving much of the vintage radio-show ambiance, right down to the theremin notes that were copyrighted in 1928 by Russian inventor Leon Theremin.

Those eerie tones, together with driving arpeggio melodies, perfectly capture the unpredictability of space and create the stage for an exciting journey through the stars.

The characters are as vibrant as the settings they inhabit. Voice actress Jennifer Hale (of “Mass Effect”) is unrecognizable as the cautious young Rivet. She is among a cast of excellent actors that provide humanity to this tale of robots and space cats. Long-running jokes about Dr. Nefarious’s out-of-character progressive work policies and his losing record finally get the spectacular payoffs they deserve, making him a comedy highlight as well.

The game’s accessibility elements, such as a slow-motion option that makes the hectic bullet hell more manageable, make this family-friendly plot more enjoyable across a wide range of skill levels. By reducing the frame rate, I was able to admire the efforts of the Insomniac team, who clearly enjoyed the creative flexibility afforded by the game’s innovative technology.

At launch, you can play in “Performance Ray Tracing” mode, which boosts the game’s frame rate to 60 frames per second and improves the visual quality of the game’s colors, movement, and textures. A crackling energy beam and a Gatling cannon that creates black holes are two of my favorite examples of the series’ signature wackiness, and they’re simpler than ever to enjoy now.

The uniqueness of “Rift Apart” rests mostly on Rivet and the connections she forges with both returning and new characters (one of whom I won’t reveal). The team, according to game director Marcus Smith, intended to develop a story that wasn’t as topical as the early game’s indictments of corporatism and pop culture.

Author Lauren Mee has crafted a story that stands on its own, with Rivet’s struggle to accept her isolation being a major theme. Relationships and trust are built on shared experiences, but Rivet has only known a world of treachery and falsehoods. When nearly everyone you’ve ever encountered has been dishonest, how do you go about collaborating with them?

Rivet’s search for community isn’t without its own share of heartache. You can tell that she doesn’t sure how to deal with the reopened wound of betrayal and that this hurts more than just herself. Even though we know that everything will turn out OK in the end, these times nonetheless hit hard.

Frequently asked questions

Is Ratchet and Clank Rift apart a good game?

The visuals of Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart are unparalleled. Ratchet & Clank is, at its heart, a standard action shooter. The speed and the range of interactions and goals in Insomniac do a fantastic job of maintaining interest. Presentation, though, is what really pulls its weight here.

Will Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart be on PS4?

Without the SSD, the game’s ability to switch between levels and scenarios in a flash would be severely limited on PS4. You can play other Ratchet & Clank games on PS4, but you’ll need a PS5 to experience Rift Apart.

Do I have to play Ratchet and Clank before Rift Apart?

If I Haven’t Played the Previous Games in the Series, Will I Need to? Developer Insomniac Games has stated that the game is intended to stand alone narratively, so even if this is your first Ratchet & Clank game, you should still enjoy it.
