Payday 3’s launch has been so disastrous that more people are playing its 10-year-old predecessor on Steam than its sequel. Starbreeze has since apologized for its lack of communication and addressed the delay with Payday 3’s initial patch.
“We’ve been quiet over the last few days, and we apologize,” the statement on the Payday website started. “It’s difficult to communicate when we haven’t been able to provide any updates on the one big topic that’s on everyone’s mind right now: when are the Payday 3 patches coming?”

Despite our quiet, we want to tell you that the team is continuing to work on our main priority, which is to get the fix we promised you out to you as soon as possible and to ensure that our patching process allows us to continue publishing them at a consistent cadence in the future.”
Starbreeze went on to say that Payday 3’s first patch is currently undergoing testing and certification with PlayStation owner Sony and Xbox owner Microsoft, which is critical in order to retain platform consistency.
The delay is due to the identification of a mistake that could result in the loss of player progress.
“The reason it has taken so long to get this first patch ready is very long and complicated, but the short version is that we discovered critical errors with our update pipeline shortly after the game released,” said Starbreeze. “There was a significant risk to player progression being wiped if we didn’t address this and ensure a solid test environment.”
Starbreeze stated that it plans to enhance Payday 3’s advancement system, which has been criticized by gamers, in order “to balance both the challenge system as well as offering infamy points for each heist.” More on this to come.
“Once we can consistently deliver patches, the team will also deliver on our plans for more content for the game,” Starbreeze said. Before the end of the year, free content updates are expected.
“We apologize once more for our silence.” We understand your irritation and fury, and we can assure you that this is not a scenario in which we want to be. The team is hard at work creating a game that will be sustained for years to come, with the goal of making Payday 3 the new criminal dawn!”
Payday 3’s debut was marred by server difficulties, prompting Starbreeze CEO Tobias Sjögren to apologize. “We are so sorry that the infrastructure didn’t hold up as expected, and although it’s impossible to prepare for every scenario — we should be able to do better,” he went on to say.

Over a month after the September 21 release of Payday 3, the patch promised to remedy these flaws is still unavailable. Payday 3 had 3.1 million players as of October 2, according to Starbreeze, although this number has fallen, at least on Steam.
Payday 3’s 24-hour peak is currently 3,234 users, which is much lower than Payday 2’s 36,538. The third game does not even make it into Steam’s top 100 most popular games, trailing Cookie Clicker, Bloons TD 6, and Russian Fishing 4.
Starbreeze criticized their third-party matchmaking partner for server difficulties at launch and stated that an offline mode would be considered (Payday 3 requires a constant online connection). “We have a lot of diligent and consistent work ahead of us to regain community trust, but we will work hard to do it,” Sjögren went on to say.
