Ten years after its release, Mafia III has been updated for current consoles. 2K and Hangar 13 have released Mafia III: Definitive Edition on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S with 60 frames-per-second gameplay, and most existing owners can upgrade for free.
The new versions arrived alongside a PC update on Oct. 8, marking the game’s 10th anniversary. Mafia III first launched on Oct. 7, 2016, according to 2K’s anniversary announcement. Here is what changes and who gets it at no extra cost.
Do PS4 owners get the PS5 version free?
Yes, if they own Mafia III: Definitive Edition. 2K says owners of the PS4 Definitive Edition, on disc or digital, receive the digital PS5 version for free through the PlayStation Store.
Earlier this week, we reported that Mafia III was listed free on the UK PlayStation Store. That free listing was for the original PS4 edition, not the Definitive Edition. 2K’s announcement only mentions Definitive Edition owners, so it is not clear whether that free copy qualifies for the upgrade.
What about Xbox One owners?
Only digital ones. Owners of a digital Xbox One copy of the Definitive Edition get the Xbox Series X|S version free from the Microsoft Store. The offer is “not available for XBOX One physical owners,” 2K says.
Players who own Mafia: The Omertà Collection on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S now have access to the new version too. 2K advises anyone who owns the game digitally, including through the Omertà Collection or Mafia: Trilogy, to search for Mafia III: Definitive Edition in their console’s store. Some players may need to add it to their library at no extra cost before it appears.
Can you carry over your save?
No. 2K says players “unfortunately won’t be able to transfer save files” from the PS4 or Xbox One versions to the new ones. Anyone midway through New Bordeaux will have to start again.
What is better on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S?
The main change is 60 fps gameplay. Cutscenes rendered in real time also run at 60 fps, but some cinematics are pre-rendered videos and stay at 30 fps. The update also improves trophy and achievement tracking, fixes spots where players got stuck in missions, and improves lighting, textures and vegetation streaming to cut down on pop-in.
The Definitive Edition includes the main game, all three story expansions (Faster, Baby!, Stones Unturned and Sign of the Times) and two bonus packs.
What does the PC update add?
The Steam version received its own Oct. 8 update. It adds frame rate caps of 120, 144, 180 and 240, an option to turn off window borders and better multi-monitor handling. It also fixes progress blockers in missions including “Get Enzo Conti,” “Kill Tommy Marcano” and the epilogue.
How long is the sale?
Mafia III: Definitive Edition is 80% off 2K’s suggested price for a limited time as part of a Mafia franchise sale. The discount applies to digital copies only. The PlayStation offer ends on Oct. 21 at 11:59 p.m. PT, the Steam offer on Oct. 22 at 10 a.m. PT and the Xbox offer on Oct. 29 at 10 a.m. PT.
