Hollow Knight’s playable area is remarkably vast, considering the game is set in a realm inhabited entirely by insects. More difficult content can be found in Hallownest as players explore the world. In Hollow Knight, there are a variety of non-playable characters (NPCs) to who the player can talk to.
After falling down the well in Dirtmouth, one of the first friendly faces the player encounters is a vendor named Cornifer. As a cartographer, he sells maps to adventurers in all of Hallownest’s major hubs. A paper trail leading to Cornifer’s mapmaking workshop is indicated by his humming, and the players can follow this trail to find him.
The player can buy Cornifer’s maps and other markers from Iselda in Dirtmouth if they discover him but don’t buy one before going on to the next location. So that you don’t waste time going back and forth, below are the locations of Cornifer throughout Hallownest.

Basin That Has Been Around For A Long Time
One can access the Ancient Basin through the southernmost Tram between Deepest and Kingdom’s Edge, or they can use the Royal Waterways to make their way down. The Tram platform is where players need to be in order to advance.
To the left of the Tram platform is a hole through which adventurers can descend. From here, you can enter the Ancient Basin’s main room, which is crawling with Shadow Creepers. There are several forks off to the right, one of which leads to a fountain where, for 3000 Geo, players can obtain a Vessel Fragment. The helpful humming mapmaker can be found right below the fountain.
The City That Cried A Million Tears
Players may first set foot in the City of Tears when they journey to its outskirts to utilize the City Crest, reopening the bridge to the Fungal Wastes. In order to reach Cornifer, players must travel further south, as the shorter route between the two is locked.
Once the player reaches the bottom, they can take the left path to find the Nailsmith and get their Knight’s nail upgraded. Before meeting Hornet at the fountain, players can head to the right and take an elevator up to meet Relic Seeker Lemm, who will pay them for artifacts they have found on their travels.
Ascending further from Lemm, the player will encounter more and more foes, many of whom will be guarding things, Geo, and other artifacts. Players who have been using the elevators and the Mantis Claw to get about will eventually find a scrap of paper that they recognize. When the Knight follows this path, he will eventually find himself in a tiny arena containing a Heavy, a Lance, and a Winged Sentry, all of whom must be vanquished before the gates can be unlocked. Cornifer is up above, along with a bench that costs 150 Geo to open.
The Peak Of Crystallized Beauty
The Forgotten Crossroads can be found due east of the Black Egg Temple, and is the initial point of entry into the Crystal Peak; however, the Lumafly Lantern is required to see through the pitch-black tunnel and use the toll machine. After that, gaining access to the following zone would cost the player 50 Geo.
After entering Crystal Peak, players should head straight ahead, across the conveyor belts, and into the huge opening. Husk Miners can be found here, and they will toss their tools at the Knight or use their picks as a slicing weapon if the Knight gets too close. A player can rest on a bench in the adjacent chamber on the right before ascending the stairs.
Players can use the Mantis Claw to scale the vertical belt and reach a patrolling Glimback, from whence they can continue their ascent. There is a Grub at the top, but it is currently locked behind a gate. As the player continues their ascent, they will enter a room populated by Crystal Crawlers, each of which will occasionally fire a devastating laser at the player. You can find Cornifer singing his heart out through the left door if you’ve made it through.
Deepnest
Cornifer can be found in one of two locations in Deepnest, depending on which entrance the Knight uses, but he won’t be humming to avoid alerting the horrible crawlies that live there. The Lumafly Lantern is helpful for finding your way in the dark.
After fighting the Mantis Lords in the Fungal Wastes, players can enter Deepnest, where they will find him cowering behind a ledge to the left and up from the entrance. Cornifer can be found south of the Failed Tramway if players approach from the Queen’s Gardens to the north.
Misty Gorge
You can access the Fog Canyon early on, but you won’t be able to explore it fully until much later in the game. It is necessary to have either the Shade Cloak or Isma’s Tear unlocked in order to approach Cornifer, who can be accessed in one of two ways.
Players coming from the left can enter Cornifer’s room through Greenpath or the Queen’s Station up the stairs. In the middle column-like section of the Fog Canyon, a route leads off to the right, eventually emerging into a room with an acid pool, platforms, and Uomas. You can hear Cornifer in this room, but there’s a Shade Gate in the way. Players with the Shade Cloak will be able to quickly enter the Shade Gate and locate the way to Cornifer.
The alternative route in the Fungal Wastes involves Isma’s Tear swimming through a little pool of acid that is immediate across from where the Leg Eater is hiding. In the Fog Canyon, this leads straight to the room where Cornifer is hiding.
Past The Point Of No Return
Cornifer will make his initial appearance here, making it one of the more convenient spots to track him down.
The room with the suspended platforms and multiple Gruzzers, Crawlids, and Tiktiks is to the left after players descend into the well from Dirtmouth. The objective is to descend to the bottom of this section, avoid the traps as you go, and exit through the door below. Cornifer is in the next room to the right.
Detritus Produced By Fungi
The Fungal Wastes, like many other parts of Hallownest, can be accessed from a variety of points. The Fungal Wastes are a likely destination for adventurers seeking the City of Tears after dispatching the False Knight and Hornet.
To reach the Queen’s Station, adventurers must go to the southeast of Greenpath and then via a brief section of Fog Canyon. Those who exit the station to the right will encounter the Fungal Wastes, while those who go to the left will find Cornifer.
If players enter the Fungal Wastes via the Forgotten Crossroads, they must keep heading south and to the left. Two Shrumal Ogres stand between them and the next set of gates. Following the familiar sounds of Cornifer’s humming, players must continue down past the projectile-spitting Sporgs and head left while avoiding acid to reach him.
After a player has obtained their first spell from the Snail Shaman in the Ancestral Mound, they will unlock access to Greenpath. Greenpath’s entry is accessible from the Forgotten Crossroads, just south of where the Grubfather is standing, via a left-forking path.
After defeating Elder Baldur with the Vengeful Spirit, players can go left into Greenpath. The trip through Greenpath is quite straight compared to the rest of Hallownest, and players will encounter Hornet, who isn’t quite guiding them to Cornifer.
Players should first head left until they reach a fork in the path, at which point they should head right along the fork. Cornifer is located in a compact section of Greenpath guarded by Volatile Mosskin and Squits, with platforms that can be hacked away in the future to facilitate travel.
The Screaming Cliffs
The Howling Cliffs are located to the left of Dirtmouth and can be accessed by returning through the King’s Pass, but only if the player has the Mantis Claw. To reach the Howling Cliffs, the Knight must return to the first room he enters after the opening cutscene and head left. The Mantis Claw is required to enter this location, which can be accessible via Greenpath.
Halfway down the cliffs, you’ll run into one of the Nailmaster brothers and find Cornifer doodling in one of the right-hand side alleys.
The Fringe Of The Kingdom
Even though there are multiple entry points into Kingdom’s Edge, the quickest route to Cornifer is via the City of Tears, and more specifically the King’s Station. Below the platform the Knight can utilize at Stag Station is a room with an abandoned platform, a broken bench, and two Vengeflies in the far right corner.
Jumping into the pool of water and continuing to the right will lead players to a shortcut leading to a secret part of the city. Stay to the right to avoid the diving Belfies that are coming for the Knight. Along the route, players can rescue a trapped Grub.
Players can ascend a road that ultimately leads to the Tower of Love, although doing so will need using the Love Key and ultimately lead them farther away from Cornifer until they reach its conclusion in Kingdom’s Edge.
Once within Kingdom’s Edge, players will find Cornifer at a secret spot along the left wall, directly below them. Players can use the Mantis Claw to securely slide down the wall to the first of two platforms, between which is the secret entrance leading to the mapmaker.
Royal Gardens
It is recommended that players use Isma’s Tear to make their way through the Fog Canyon to the Queen’s Gardens. After climbing with the gliding Uomas and Oomas from the Queen’s Station, players will reach the Fog Canyon and find the first path that branches to the left. To get to Queen’s Gardens, players will have to swim through an acid pit and avoid spikes, but with Isma’s Tear, it’s possible to do both.
Keep going left until you reach the first Mantis Petra on the map. The entrance to the Stag Station is up ahead, but access is restricted until the players can flip the switch. In order to access the region with the temporary platforms, players must descend to the very bottom, then turn right. The next area features a brief battle encounter with more Mantis Petras, and the exit is locked until all of them have been vanquished.
Following a successful match, the winning team should head to the right, where a piece of paper and a bench sign awaits. In order to locate the humming cartographer, just stick to these.
King’s Highways
It is possible to gain access to the City of Tears’s closed hatch below Relic Seeker Lemm’s current location. To gain access to the Royal Waterways, you’ll need a Simple Key to open the hatch. Before venturing into the Royal Waterways, it is advised that players equip the Lumafly Lantern for simpler navigation.
A left turn after entering the hatch will lead adventurers past the two Pilflips and onto the bottom route. A player heading to the bench should instead bear left and follow the Hwurmps across the room. The entrance to the region with the Flukemons is a little opening in the top left where the player will find one of Cornifer’s papers.
Return to the main chamber and turn left; however, players should be aware that a Mask Shard can be found at the bottom left of the pool in the main room. Players will be trapped in the following room until they battle the adversaries who suddenly come and open the doors. Using the Mantis Claw, players can ascend to the leftmost platform and confront Cornifer, who is waiting there. The PC, Linux, PS4, Xbox One, and Switch versions of Hollow Knight can all be purchased and played.
