High On Life: Rick and Morty legend Justin Roiland enters a pub with J.B. Smoove, some enterprising video game programmers, and maybe enough drugs to make the place seem like the Yellow Submarine more than once. Roiland, giggling joyfully and wiping beer from the corners of his lips with the extra leftover cash he’s earned selling Mr. Meeseek’s stuff, announces.
“Right, fellas, here’s an idea I’ve been working on.” The people are drugs, the aliens are druggies, and all the firearms are alive. “Let’s design a video game where you play as a gentleman rescuing the earth from aliens with guns. You play a role in it, too, J.B. And everyone in the room nods in unison, accepting this as fact.
This must be the plot of the greatest comedy ever written, right? But that’s where I have you fooled; this is the real idea of High on Life, the forthcoming “comedy shooter” from Roiland’s own development firm, Squanch Games. It seems like it would be a fascinating adventure. As a result, here is all we know about High on Life before its December release!

Intoxicated By The Good Life
The Xbox showcase this year included a game called High on Life, which seems like the typical high-octane adventure from the Roiland household. Put yourself in the shoes (actually, the sophisticated cybernetic mech suit) of a low-income young guy who has just graduated from high school in a futuristic setting where a gang of aliens has stolen all of mankind.
According to legend, you are your people’s final line of defense against the alien invaders. See, to these extraterrestrials, we humans are as addicting as the contents of Charlie Sheen’s glove box, which puts a cool twist on things: they’re not wanting to kill you for the purpose of it, they simply want to get their dose.
Now you’re going to become the hardest bounty hunter in the galaxy or at least someone who pretends to be one. To help you in your quest, you have access to a collection of weaponry that would make a particular Lombax green with envy. We’re talking about the standard issue here: goo weapons, gravity guns, and weaponry that attach mind-controlling parasites to the enemy’s cranium.
The Gun That Talks (Yammers, Smokes)
However, unlike its galactic predecessors, the technology in High on Life really interacts with its users by providing feedback. True, they’re called “a cast of charismatic firearms,” and trust me when I say that when Sony said that the next generation of gaming will be about “providing more input” to the user, they probably didn’t expect it to be taken this literally.
No matter the predicament, you can always crack a joke with any of these weapons, which have monster designs that aren’t too far from the Rick and Morty aesthetic. Don’t make the mark? When they find out, they’ll let you know. Have a go at it. They will still inform you. A long time without doing anything? Do you take a lot of “wall walks?” To pick one’s nose? Absolutely not. Do not make any more noise.
Of course, for some gamers, this will be the deciding factor (can you tolerate Roiland’s nasally delivery for 20+ hours?) but for fans of that particular kind of humor, it’ll be veritable manna from above. While tracking down Garmantuous, the ultimate criminal lord, you’ll encounter a revolving cast of bounty hunters also on the lookout for him.
If you play your cards properly, however, some of these NPCs may even wind up on your side. All I’m saying is that it never hurts to use a little bribery. A character is even voiced by the inimitable J.B. Smoove, whose agent is presumably still having nightmares over the original talks.
High On Life Will Be Released?
High on Life had a variety of setbacks, typical of current video games. One of them was caused by the introduction of the new God of War and Call of Duty games, as we previously reported. Squanch Games’ upper management was reluctant to release their wacky, maybe disastrous product in an attempt to compete with those industry giants. As a shooter, I can see it appealing to viewers who are tired of this kind of title dominating the market, but hey, whatever works.
The game is still scheduled to release on December 13 for the Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC despite these difficulties. I am very sorry for the loss you must feel you have suffered, whoever the owner of anything else may be. Now accepting preorders.
