The game features a hack-and-slash style of gameplay, in which the player must fight enemies using a mix of their primary weapon assault, a special attack, a dash ability, and a magic ability, all while avoiding taking damage, in order to advance as far as possible in the game. Even though it is very likely that Zagreus will perish, the player can spend the treasure they have acquired to strengthen certain traits, unlock new weapons and skills, and so increase their odds of surviving following runs.
The development of Hades came after the release of Pyre by Supergiant Games. The pyre was a game in which the developers wanted to experiment with procedural narrative storytelling, but they discovered that due to the nature of the main gameplay, players did not play through Pyre multiple times to experiment with this. The roguelike nature of Hades made it possible for the developers to tell the player several versions of the same story over the course of multiple playthroughs of the game.
Hades was a commercial and critical success, selling over one million copies and receiving praise for its gameplay, art direction, soundtrack, narrative, and characters. The game also garnered praise for its art direction. It was selected as the best game of the year by a number of different award shows and media outlets, and it is widely regarded as one of the best video games that will be released in 2020.

The perspective of the game is isometric, and the user assumes control of Zagreus throughout the experience. The player begins a run-through of the game by attempting to fight their way through a number of rooms; the rooms are drawn from a pool of pre-determined layouts, but their order and the enemies that appear are determined at random. The player’s goal is to make it through all of the rooms without being defeated. The gameplay consists of slashing and hacking at enemies.
A magic “cast” that can be used from a distance, a dash that provides momentary intangibility and mobility and can deal damage when combined with an attack or boon, and a summon attack that can call tremendous power from one of the Gods are the abilities that are available to the player in this game.
The Olympians will deliver Boons at various points throughout a run. Each Boon offers the player an option between three permanent boosts and effects that are applicable to that run, and they can make their selection at any time. The boons each have a unique design inspired by one of the Olympian gods; for instance, Zeus’s boons do damage via lightning bolts, and Poseidon’s boons cause waves to be pushed backward.
If Zagreus’ health points drop to zero while he has no “death defiance” tokens left, he is defeated and taken by the river Styx back to the House of Hades, which effectively acts as the game’s overworld behemoth.
The player will move through rooms to gradually climb up the Underworld; after clearing a room, the player will be given the room’s rewards, allowing them to grow stronger or recover lost health points as Zagreus moves closer and closer to his The gameplay of Hades is a hybrid of roguelikes and dungeon crawlers. Certain obols and types of upgrades are lost upon death and must be recollected after each attempt, while other types of currency can be spent at the House to buy permanent upgrades that have an effect on all subsequent efforts.
After the player has completed a predetermined number of rooms within a region, the region’s bosses will become available for battle. These bosses include one of the three Furies in Tartarus, the skeletonized Lernaean Hydra in Asphodel, Theseus and Asterius in Elysium, and Hades himself at the very gates of the Underworld.
Before beginning another effort to flee, Zagreus has time to look around the House of Hades in the intervals between his runs. At this point, the player has the opportunity to make influence the meta-game by using objects that they have retrieved from previous run-throughs. The player has the ability to unlock and enhance abilities for Zagreus, order the building of new Underworld features that may occur in future playthroughs, gain or upgrade new weapons, and order the construction of new Underworld features.
They also have the option of having Zagreus engage with the numerous characters that populate the Underworld and increase his standing with them. These interactions add narrative components to the game and may even provide tasks with additional prizes. As the story unfolds, the player also has the opportunity to develop romantic relationships with some non-playable characters (NPCs).
By using the Pact of Punishment, which allows the player to add more challenges or adjust some parts of the game, the player is able to manually personalize and increase the complexity of the gameplay as the game progresses. This can be done at any time during the game.
For instance, the Pact may augment the attack power, health, or the number of foes that are on the run; it may even drastically alter a portion of the gameplay by modifying the boss fights, such as making it possible for Theseus to use a machine-gun-mounted chariot or adding an additional phase to the fight against Hades. The player can continue to collect unique gifts after the runs, unlock some special decorative items that can be used back at the House, and progress specific NPC subplots if they keep increasing the difficulty.
An additional option available to the player is one known as God Mode, which can be activated whenever desired. After each unsuccessful attempt to traverse the Underworld using this setting, the player character will get more powerful. Players who are experiencing trouble with the game will now have an easier time progressing through it and will be able to experience the game’s whole tale.
Hades Plot
Zagreus, who is the son of Hades, is attempting to flee the domain of the Underworld that his father rules. He receives assistance from his adoptive mother, Nyx; the Gods of Olympus, to whom he has extended his hand; and a great number of other people who live in the Underworld.
Hades insists that there is no way out of the Underworld, and he impedes Zagreus’ progress by releasing the monsters who reside there upon him. As soon as Zagreus is killed, he is instantly resurrected at the House of Hades, which is located at the very bottom of the Underworld. He then departs this location to make yet another effort to flee.
It is later revealed that Zagreus’ goal is to flee from the Underworld in order to discover his birth mother, Persephone, whom he has never known. All his life, he has been brainwashed to believe that he is Nyx’s child. It is claimed that anyone who disobeys Hades’ edict may expect to suffer punishment beyond their wildest imagination. Hades will not even permit her name to be mentioned in his House.
Nyx comes to the conclusion that the best way for Zagreus to discover the truth about his birth mother is for her to put him in touch with his ancestors who live on Olympus. Once Zagreus has emerged victorious from the Underworld and vanquished Hades, he tracks down Persephone, who has fled to a hamlet in Greece.
Zagreus learns, following a bittersweet reunion with his father, that he will perish shortly after ascending to the surface since, like his father, he is doomed to be chained to the Underworld. Despite this, he swears that he will continue to flee from the Underworld so that he can be with Persephone and discover the truth about her disappearance.
During the course of these encounters, it is disclosed that Zeus “gave” Hades Persephone as a prize for Hades’s rule over the Underworld. However, the other Olympians were under the impression that Persephone had simply vanished. They had a happy marriage until Zagreus, the child they were expecting, died at birth.
This was because the Fates had decided that Hades would never have an heir. Persephone hurried away in her sorrow, but she would not go back to her birthplace on Olympus. She did not like living there because of the continual fighting that occurred between the Olympians.

Following the conclusion of a bargain that Nyx struck with the Fates, Zagreus was eventually brought back to life by Nyx. Persephone is reluctant to go back to the Underworld because she is afraid that Hades would be punished by the Olympians if they learn the truth about what happened to her after she vanished. In the end, Zagreus is successful in persuading her to come back by reminding her of the ties that bind a family together, and Charon transports them to the House of Hades.
Persephone resumes her duties as Queen of the Underworld, while Hades, who has gained a newfound respect for his son, gives Zagreus permission to continue his attempts to flee the Underworld under the pretense that he is investigating potential weaknesses in the Underworld’s protection.
In an epilogue, Persephone reveals to Zagreus her intention to make amends with the Olympians by hosting a meal in the House that is open to each and every one of them. At the feast, they tell that Hades and Persephone fled away together and had Zagreus, while also claiming that Persephone can only leave the Underworld for a few months out of the year since she ate seeds from an Underworld pomegranate.

This explanation is readily accepted by the Olympians, despite the fact that it is hinted that they are aware of the reality and simply want to go on. Now that everyone has made amends, Zagreus must continue to fulfill his obligations in order to flee his home.
