The original God of War titles are rumoured to be making a reappearance on PS5, albeit we’re not putting too much faith in the source. Famous rumourmonger Nick Baker stated on the Xbox Era podcast – we know, we know – that a remaster of Kratos’ first three excursions “might be happening.”
It’s worth mentioning that God of War 3 has already been re-released for the PlayStation 4, and is completely playable with backwards compatibility on Sony’s next-generation console.

The Japanese behemoth famously remastered the original two games in the series for the PS3 and PSP. This sparked a trend at the time, resulting in a slew of HD re-releases of popular PS2 games. However, outside of cloud streaming, the PS5 cannot play PS3 games natively, so we think it makes sense to bring them back.
“I’ve heard that we might be getting the original God of War trilogy remastered on PlayStation,” Baker claimed, though he was unsurprisingly vague about the specifics. “Is this a direct port of what we have on PS3?” In that scenario, I’m a little less enthused. Or is this something more complicated, closer to a remake?”
Baker has been a great fan of PlayStation rumours in the past, but few of them have proven true. Back in 2021, he stated that there is a “chance” that a new inFAMOUS would be presented at a PlayStation Showcase, but the event passed without any mention of Sucker Punch’s superhero franchise.
A year later, he claimed that a new Sly Cooper game was in the works, prompting the Seattle-based developer to flatly dismiss the rumour: “For now, there are no inFAMOUS or Sly Cooper games in development.”
Of course, Sony may decide to bring back the original God of War titles merely for historical sake. Without giving too much away, the new God of War Ragnarok: Valhalla add-on has significant ties to the PS2 titles, which aren’t always simple to play on modern hardware.
