Destiny 2’s seasonal endings have typically been somewhat underwhelming. A new season finale mission has been added to Season of the Seraph, and it’s the finest content the loot shooter has seen since the developer switched from releasing DLC expansions to releasing content quarterly.
The mission is cinematic and difficult, and the final cutscene will have gamers scrambling to figure out what it means for Lightfall. Bungie released a new story task on Tuesday called Abhorrent Imperative, accessible to all players regardless of whether or not they have completed the seasonal quest log, with only two weeks left before that expansion goes live.
Return to Seraph Station to stop the Warsat network from attacking the Traveler, it says. With everyone’s strength capped at 1350 and the Legendary difficulty setting, foes will be better protected and more aggressive. I took a lot more of a beating than I bargained for but still had a great time.

The objective of the mission is to sneak inside the Seraph space station when it is under attack from Eramis’s Warsats, which are intended to destroy the Traveller. After some platforming with Earth in the background, the protagonist faces up against Eramis and then an agent of the Hive war god Xivu Arath.
To pass the time, you can watch as Rasputin’s rebuilt heavy-frame mechs decimate the hordes of foes standing in your way. The ultimate confrontation is a three-stage combat that, rather than trying to brute-force your way through it, encourages you to study and adapt to where foes spawn.

The cutscene you get for sticking around isn’t as unique as Destiny 2’s attempt at a Fortnite-style live event in 2020, but it pays off considerably more handsomely. Having hung above Earth’s Last City since 2014, the Traveller now departs into space as Rasputin manages to self-destruct, destroying the Warsats before they can fire.
Eramis is perplexed as to why it stayed put. The Witness, a cosmic villain, claims that this is because the creature had nowhere else to go.
Meanwhile, Rasputin announces in a recorded message that a valuable artifact has been stashed away on Neptune. The cutscene concludes with The Traveller in the same location over Earth as it was on the first Destiny promotional artwork released almost eight years ago.
The big reveal for those who are completely lost in Destiny 2’s dizzying space opera is that Eramis is working directly for The Witness, that The Traveller is on the move but hasn’t completely abandoned humanity, and that Neptune, the new main location for Lightfall, holds the power to stop the second collapse.
Rasputin claims his memory was wiped off the information, creating a mystery as to who would have wished to keep it concealed and why. Despite still being an agent of The Witness, Eramis had come to a crossroads since she incorrectly assumed that The Traveller would desert humanity just as it had abandoned her civilization.
The Witness is drawing nearer, and with him comes the realization that 2024’s The Final Shape will be the culmination of everything that has happened in Destiny thus far.
In contrast to the conclusion of past seasons in recent memory, this one leaves a totally different impression. The recent updates to Destiny 2 have gotten stuck in a cycle where they introduce a slew of new story missions for a few weeks, then nothing for a while, and then a brief task and some conversation that rarely feel like a payoff for the months of grinding.

That was unquestionably the situation a year ago, prior to the arrival of The Witch Queen. The fantastic conclusion to Season of the Seraph hopefully bodes well for the rest of Lightfall, which will be available to players on February 28.
