The 10 Absolute Best Video Games of 2026 So Far, Ranked

The best video games of 2026 have already made this one of the strongest gaming years in recent memory.

We’re eight months in, and there’s been very little downtime. Capcom has had a particularly strong year, Switch 2 is settling into its first full calendar year, and several smaller games have ended up being more memorable than much bigger releases.

And we haven’t even reached GTA 6 yet.

So rather than wait for the year-end lists, we’re ranking the best video games of 2026 so far based on what we’ve actually seen through August.

10. Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection

Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection is the most confident this RPG spinoff has felt.

Released in March, the story centers on the kingdoms of Azuria and Vermeil as they deal with an ecological crisis and the discovery of twin Rathalos from a species thought to be extinct.

The turn-based combat and monster-bonding systems will feel familiar if you’ve played the earlier games, but the larger environments and more serious story give this sequel more weight.

The characters don’t always land, but this is still the strongest Monster Hunter Stories game yet.

9. Pragmata

After years of delays, Pragmata finally arrived in April.

You play as Hugh, an engineer stranded on a lunar facility, alongside Diana, a young android who becomes central to the combat.

The interesting part is how the two characters work together. Diana hacks enemies to expose weaknesses while Hugh handles the shooting. Instead of treating hacking as a separate minigame, Capcom builds it directly into each fight.

It sounds like the sort of system that could become annoying after a few hours. It doesn’t.

Pragmata took a long time to get here, but the final game justified the wait.

8. Mewgenics

Mewgenics is probably the strangest game on this list.

Edmund McMillen and Tyler Glaiel’s tactical roguelite is built around breeding cats, passing genetics between generations and sending those cats into turn-based battles.

There are more than 1,000 abilities, hundreds of items and more than 10 classes, so builds can get complicated very quickly.

The premise sounds ridiculous because it is ridiculous. That’s part of the appeal.

What starts as a game about breeding weird cats slowly turns into a deep strategy game about bloodlines, abilities and party composition. It’s one of the best video games of 2026 precisely because there isn’t much else like it.

7. Nioh 3

Nioh 3 doesn’t throw away what worked in the first two games. It gives those systems more room.

The biggest change is the ability to switch between Samurai and Ninja combat styles. Samurai is heavier and more deliberate, while Ninja favors speed and mobility. You can move between them during combat rather than committing to one approach.

Team Ninja also opened up the level design with larger open-field areas, so there’s more reason to wander away from the main route.

It’s still difficult and occasionally unforgiving, but that’s hardly going to surprise anyone who played the first two.

This is the most complete version of Nioh so far.

6. Saros

Housemarque didn’t make Returnal 2. It came close enough to make Saros immediately recognizable, though.

The game follows Arjun Devraj on Carcosa, a shifting alien world filled with the kind of projectile-heavy combat Housemarque does better than almost anyone.

The major difference is progression. Death remains part of the loop, but permanent upgrades mean you’re still moving forward between runs.

Combat is fast without becoming unreadable, even when the screen fills with projectiles. That balance is difficult to get right, and Saros makes it look easy.

For PS5 owners, it’s one of the best games of 2026 so far.

5. 007 First Light

Putting James Bond in the hands of the studio behind Hitman made sense from the beginning.

007 First Light follows a younger Bond, played by Patrick Gibson, as he works toward earning 00 status inside MI6.

Because IO Interactive isn’t adapting an existing movie, it gets to build its own version of Bond. That means stealth, infiltration, gunfights and bigger action sequences can all exist without the game constantly trying to recreate scenes you’ve already watched.

The commercial response has been huge as well. First Light sold 1.5 million copies in its first 24 hours and later passed 4 million worldwide.

Is it the best Bond game since GoldenEye?

There’s a strong case for it.

4. Pokémon Pokopia

Pokémon Pokopia works because it isn’t trying to be another traditional Pokémon RPG.

There are no gym badges to chase and battling is no longer the point. You play as a Ditto in human form and rebuild a desolate world by gathering materials, growing plants, crafting and creating places for Pokémon to live.

It’s basically Pokémon through the lens of a life sim.

That change in direction has worked remarkably well. Pokopia is currently the highest-rated Pokémon game on Metacritic and has plenty to do once the main journey is finished.

For a series that has spent decades following a familiar structure, this feels genuinely different.

3. Mina the Hollower

Yacht Club Games could have made another game that looked and played like Shovel Knight.

Instead, it made Mina the Hollower.

The crowdfunded action-adventure takes place on a cursed island and uses Game Boy Color-style pixel art, Gothic horror and a top-down structure that immediately brings old Zelda games to mind.

Mina can burrow underground, attack with a whip and use different weapons and trinkets as you explore.

It’s not especially long, and that’s a strength. There isn’t much padding between the good parts.

Among the best video games of 2026, Mina the Hollower is a reminder that a game doesn’t need 80 hours of content to feel complete.

2. Resident Evil Requiem

Resident Evil Requiem brings the series back to Raccoon City while splitting its attention between two very different characters.

Grace Ashcroft gets the more vulnerable survival-horror sections, including her time inside the Wrenwood Hotel. Leon S. Kennedy is exactly what you’d expect at this stage of his career: better armed, more experienced and much more comfortable putting zombies down.

The game moves between their stories rather than treating them as two completely separate campaigns.

You can also play both characters in first- or third-person, which works surprisingly well considering how different those perspectives can make a Resident Evil game feel.

Requiem is currently the franchise’s best-reviewed non-remake in more than two decades.

It deserves to be near the top of any list of the best video games of 2026.

1. Forza Horizon 6

Forza Horizon 6 finally takes the series to Japan, and Playground Games made the most of it.

Released in May, the game launched with more than 550 cars and a map that moves between countryside, mountain roads and Tokyo.

Tokyo is the biggest urban environment ever built for a Horizon game, and it gives the driving a different rhythm from the wide-open roads the series usually relies on.

The important part, though, is that it still feels like Forza Horizon. You can jump in and start driving immediately, or spend hours tuning cars, completing events and hunting down everything on the map.

Metacritic named it the best-reviewed new game of the first half of 2026.

A PS5 version is also expected later this year.

Games That Just Missed the Top 10

August added two games that arrived too late for us to confidently place them in the ranking.

Star Wars Zero Company launched August 27 from Bit Reactor, a studio that includes developers with experience on XCOM. It’s a turn-based tactics game set during the Clone Wars, with permadeath enabled by default but optional.

Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 arrived the same day and finally brought Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots beyond its long stay on PS3.

Both deserve more time before being placed against games we’ve had months to play and evaluate.

They could easily appear much higher when we revisit the best video games of 2026 at the end of the year.

Forza Horizon 6 takes first place, but Resident Evil Requiem, Mina the Hollower and Pokémon Pokopia aren’t far behind.

And the year isn’t finished.

GTA 6 is still scheduled for November, while several other releases could change this ranking before December.
