Golf With Your Friends is a pretty laid-back and chill experience in this era of loud, fast-paced multiplayer battle royales, MMORPGs, and FPS shooters. It is, of course, a niche genre in multiplayer gaming, but this game falls into the sports area.
Football, cricket, and basketball are top-rated among video game enthusiasts. Golf is a relatively uncommon sport, and I would describe it as an acquired taste. You’ll have a great time with your buddies if you enjoy it.
Backlight Interactive, an Australian game developer, created it with love and enthusiasm as a multiplayer indie release. You can see that this initiative isn’t supported by millions of dollars in financial resources or significant personnel. Backlight Interactive began as a game development studio with only three brothers in charge of the entire production.
This game was released as early access in 2016, and it took approximately four years for it to be released as a complete game in 2020. This game is available for purchase on PC, Xbox One, PS4, Google Stadia, and Nintendo Switch. The concept of this game is pretty basic, and it took four years for the finished product to be released.
The game allows up to 12 people to compete through 13 difficult stages. Each level has 18 holes to score, for a total of 234 holes to play.
You can also gain customization options for your golf balls as you go through the levels. In terms of classes, you can use the level editor to create your custom mini-map to play with pals.
Because this is a multiplayer game, you can invite your friends to play (as implied by the title). Can they, however, join you if they are on separate platforms? Is Golf With Your Friends available on several platforms?
Is Golf With Your Friends Crossplay?
To be accurate and to the point, the answer to this question is No. As of writing this in 2023, there is no support for cross-platform gaming with your buddies. It’s a shame that a game with such a catchy title lacks crossplay, allowing you to play Golf With Your Friends.
If you’re on the same platform, go ahead; nothing is stopping you from having a good time, but what about those who already own a copy of Golf With Your Friends on other platforms?
They can’t join you, and their only choice is to switch to the same console as you if they want to play with you. Cross-platform is in high demand these days, and developers are attempting to include crossplay in practically every AAA product.
That is what gaming enthusiasts desire these days, and they are not incorrect in demanding a platform where everyone, including their friends, can play the same game. Why not go for it, especially if you’re publishing your game on many platforms?
It’s not as simple as it seems.
Developing unified servers is not a one-day task; it needs a significant amount of effort and money. As previously stated, Golf with Your Friends was an indie project created by three persons that was in the early access phase for four years before being released to the public as the final version.
This demonstrates that Devs were limited in terms of financial resources and staff, making expecting cross-platform play from them somewhat unfair.
Because consoles and PCs use separate game engine APIs, they are incompatible. Many issues must be considered, such as input lag, latency, and compatibility.
As a game developer, your first goal should be to ensure that every player has an equal and fair experience in-game. Because of the limited player population, crossplay does not benefit more miniature games. A small number of gamers will never fully utilize cross-platform mode.

Limited resources can easily influence a decision, and in this instance, I won’t blame any devs for not implementing crossplay in this game for the reasons I indicated above. However, it would be wonderful to hear from them on this matter.
Are there any news or updates to keep the player base updated? Communication between developers and gamers is critical for building fan loyalty and trust.
It’s a niche game with few players, which I guess is kind of the purpose because it looks like something I’d like playing with my friends when I’m weary or looking forward to some downtime.
Some people enjoy these types of games. Therefore, the developers may include cross-play in the future, but there is currently no news or update.
