Super Mario Bros. Wonder was released last week on the Nintendo Switch, and it was an instant success with critics. Super Mario Bros. Wonder appears to be a commercial triumph as well, as it is now the fastest-selling Super Mario game in Europe.
This information was obtained from Nintendo of Europe’s official Twitter account, albeit no sales figures were provided.
However, we do have Japanese sales figures from Famitsu (via Gematsu), where the game was the best-selling title last week, selling a whopping 668,634 copies. This is much more than Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which came in second with 77,348 copies sold.
The Tweet from Nintendo of Europe is included below:
Wowie zowie! In its first three days on sale, Super Mario Bros. Wonder has become the fastest-selling Super Mario game ever in Europe. A huge thanks to everyone who helped make this a wonderful launch. pic.twitter.com/7BtS7yHPtk

It’s worth noting that Famitsu’s figures for Super Mario Bros. Wonder only reflect retail sales, which excludes digital sales on the eShop; this means the actual amount is likely much higher.
No sales figures for North America have been released as of yet. It’s hardly surprising that information from the region is delayed compared to Europe and Japan. Nintendo frequently announces milestone numbers, so if Super Mario Bros. Wonder swiftly sells a few million copies worldwide, we may find out in the near future.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder Critical Praise
As the sales figures for Super Mario Bros. Wonder begin to trickle in, it’s worth mentioning that the game has also proven to be a big critical success. The game now has a Metacritic score of 93, putting it ahead of several of this year’s most anticipated titles.
It has been likened to Super Mario World by critics, with many hailing it as the best 2D Mario game in decades. Strong critical acclaim is likely to have boosted sales, but the game is also the first new Mario release since The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
The film grossed more than a billion dollars worldwide, securing a sequel and probable spin-offs. Fans were probably eager for a significant new Mario game, and the timing couldn’t have been more perfect!

Upcoming Mario Games
Super Mario Bros. Wonder, along with The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, is undoubtedly going to be one of Nintendo’s hottest titles of the holiday season; that previously looked obvious, but this early sales data indeed seems to show it.
The studio is still working on numerous more Mario games, one of which will be released on the Nintendo Switch next month. Super Mario RPG, a remake of a renowned Super Nintendo game, will be released on November 17th.
Mario and his supporting cast will appear in a number of new games and remakes in early 2024, including Mario vs. Donkey Kong (February 16th) and Princess Peach: Showtime! (March 22nd), and Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD (summer 2024).
