One of the most important questions that people had after Microsoft bought Bethesda for $7.5 billion in 2021 was whether or not The Elder Scrolls 6 would be available only to Microsoft employees. Phil Spencer, the boss of Xbox, has danced around the problem, most recently saying that a choice had not yet been made. But now, one of Microsoft’s own papers says that the argument is over: The Elder Scrolls 6 will not come out on PlayStation 5.
The Elder Scrolls 6 Secret Document
Stephen Totilo, an Axios writer, tweeted a newly unsealed document from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) vs. Microsoft trial over the Activision Blizzard buyout. The document includes a list of announced Bethesda games, along with their platform plans and release dates.
From Microsoft’s responses in the FTC vs Microsoft case. Elder Scrolls VI listed here as Xbox and PC and releasing 2026 or later.

The part about The Elder Scrolls 6 is especially interesting. The paper says that the game will not come out on PS5, but only on Xbox and PC. No date has been set for when it will come out, but the game is “expected 2026 or later.” Microsoft has not yet officially announced who will be able to play The Elder Scrolls 6 or when it will be available. IGN has asked Microsoft to say something.

The Microsoft comment on exclusivity in the document is a quotation from Spencer in a 2021 interview with GQ: “In order to be on Xbox, I want us to be able to bring the full complete package of what we have.” And it is true when I consider Elder Scrolls 6.”It is perhaps unexpected that The Elder Scrolls 6 has been delayed to avoid PS5, given that other Bethesda games have done the same. Arkane’s Redfall and Bethesda Game Studios’ Starfield were both exclusive to Xbox and PC. The future Indiana Jones game from MachineGames is likewise expected to be an Xbox and PC exclusive.
Given the stated release date, The Elder Scrolls 6 may also bypass this generation of consoles. The Xbox Series X and S will be six years old by the end of 2026, while Microsoft’s next-generation system will be released in 2028.
Surprisingly, The Elder Scrolls 6 was unveiled at E3 2018 five years ago. Earlier this month, while speaking to the press about Starfield, Bethesda director Todd Howard said that, in retrospect, he probably wouldn’t have revealed The Elder Scrolls 6 in the same way. “I would’ve probably announced it more casually,” Howard admitted.
Last month, Bethesda’s chief of publishing, Pete Hines, acknowledged The Elder Scrolls 6 was in “early development” and urged fans not to expect to hear anything about it anytime soon.
