Mortal Kombat fans have been eagerly awaiting the release of Mortal Kombat 1, the latest installment in the iconic fighting game series that promises to reboot the franchise with a new timeline and revamped gameplay. The game is set to launch on September 19 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
On Thursday, July 6, NetherRealm Studios hosted the first Kombat Kast livestream for Mortal Kombat 1, showcasing new gameplay footage, story details, and character reveals. The stream’s highlight was a new trailer focused on the Lin Kuei, the ninja clan that includes fan-favorite characters like Sub-Zero and Scorpion.
Smoke and Rain Join the Roster
The trailer confirmed two more playable characters for Mortal Kombat 1: Smoke and Rain. Both characters have been part of the series since Mortal Kombat 2 and Mortal Kombat 3 but have been absent from some recent games.
Smoke is a former human turned into a cyborg by Lin Kuei but later regained his free will and human form. He uses his smoke abilities to create illusions, teleport, and suffocate his enemies. In Mortal Kombat 1, he also wields a dagger and smoke bombs for close-range combat.
Rain is a half-god who is the son of Argus, the protector god of Edenia. He has the power to manipulate water and weather, creating projectiles, portals, and storms. In Mortal Kombat 1, he also carries a staff to enhance his hydrokinesis.
Both characters sport fresh looks and reimagined rivalries in the new game. According to the trailer, Smoke, Sub-Zero, and Scorpion are now allies in the new timeline, while Rain is an enemy who seeks to overthrow Earthrealm.

Cyrax, Sektor, and Frost Make Cameo Appearances
The trailer also revealed three more characters who will appear in Mortal Kombat 1 as Kameo Fighters. These characters are not fully playable but can assist the main fighters with special moves or finishers.
The three Kameo Fighters are Cyrax, Sektor, and Frost. Cyrax and Sektor are also former human ninjas who were converted into cyborgs by Lin Kuei. They have different abilities such as bombs, missiles, nets, and lasers. Frost is a female cryomancer who can manipulate ice like Sub-Zero. She debuted in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance and has a rebellious attitude.
The trailer showed how these characters can help or hinder the main fighters in various ways. For example, Cyrax can drop bombs on the opponent or trap them in a net, while Sektor can fire missiles or teleport behind them. Frost can freeze the opponent or create ice clones of herself.

The Trailer Showcases Brutal Gameplay and Story Elements
As expected from a Mortal Kombat game, the trailer was filled with blood and gore. It showed off some of the new gameplay features of Mortal Kombat 1, such as super moves, finishers, stage interactions, and environmental hazards.
Super moves are powerful attacks that can be activated when the fighter’s meter is full. They involve cinematic sequences that show the fighter’s signature moves in slow motion and with X-ray effects. For example, Smoke’s super move involves stabbing his opponent with his dagger, then blowing smoke into their lungs until they explode.
Finishers are fatal moves that can be performed at the end of a match to finish off the opponent gruesomely. They include Fatalities and classic Mortal Kombat finishers that involve dismemberment, decapitation, impalement, or other forms of mutilation. They also have Brutalities and quick finishers that involve breaking bones or crushing skulls.
Stage interactions are objects or elements in the background that the fighters can use to gain an advantage or deal damage. For example, in one stage set in a subway station, the soldiers can throw each other into incoming trains or use electrical wires to shock their opponents.
Environmental hazards are traps or obstacles that can harm or kill the fighters if they are not careful. For example, in one stage set in a forest, spikes on the ground can impale the fighters if they fall on them.
The trailer also showed the story mode of Mortal Kombat 1, which will follow the Lin Kuei ninjas as they infiltrate a compound. It hinted at some plot twists and conflicts in the new timeline. For instance, Sub-Zero seems to have ambitions to rule Earthrealm rather than defend it, which may cause a rift between him and his brother Scorpion.
